MG Midget and Sprite General - Moto lita renovation

Hi all
I have just bought a lovely genuine moto lita off eBay for my midget. However it needs a little TLC. The varnish needs removing ideally I was wondering if any of you have tackled the same project? Varnish remover or sandpaper? And to finish a nice satin varnish or one of the numerous oils, waxes that are on the Market?
Your feedback is appreciated

Sr,

Thats a nice wheel, to be honest I would seriously consider the advice of a professional wood worker, that area of chemical tech has just exploded by leaps and bounds over the past several years, and alot of that stuff is non compatiable with each other,

one of the things that screwed me over royaly several years ago is some of these sundries, are now weather regional, without saying so much, I applied a new high performance stain to some trim that was needing lots of hours to dry at 15 - 20 % humidity needless to say it calculated, out to about 20 days per coat dry time for missouri, needless to say,,,,always read the dry time as it relates to the humidity and temp of your world region BEFORE you apply to 350 feet of 5.25 colonial oak base board....hahaha (live and learn)

Anyway there is some amazing new stuff out there, but id pay good money for advice if you have to inorder to find the perfect combnation...but most pros will offer free advice, but id at least get A bid from them to do the work, in this economy you can get a real deal with high end results

That said, theres always minwax and its cousins at the usual suspects, it should look good for about 500 miles.

Don't listen to Prop you can easly do this allone.

use some chemical paint remover on the rim (make sure the spokes are taped off with duck tape or something simulair)

How to proceed depends on what finish you want.

If you want a matt finish with something like "osmo hardwax oil"
Which is easy to apply and easy to maintain.
Sand to 120 grit untill all marks are gone
apply the oil and when dry rub down with a clean cloth
Then sand to the highes grit you want (you can go as high as 2000) depending on the finish you want on both the wood as the rivets and alloy rim on the side.
You can keep oiling and ribbing down in between this willfill the wood and make it smoother.
End with 2 coats and rub down very good to remove sticky feel.
To maintain you can put on some oil every year.

For a high gloss finish us a good yacht lacquer with UV filter.
sand to 180 grit, do not sand the wood anny futher.
If you sand to wood to fine the lac will not adhere properly.
If the metal pieces in the rim need a finer finish then only sand them localy.
then apply several thin layers to build upp the lac only slighly sanding in between (do remove any runs)
When happy with the finish let it harden for 1 or 2 weeks.
Then you can wet sand it with a high grit paper and polish with car polish

Alex... Yepp I agree
,
Where my consern is , , putting varnish over poly, linseed oil sandwiched between hard wax, and the new waterborn resin stains ect ect and buying a professioanal stain, thats not conducive to your climate,,, there are so many ways this can go south in a flash

But I would, pay close atten and trust what Onno has to say due to his extinsive wood working talents, his guitars are a work of art,

And obviously from the above commet he knows his stufff,,,

Bugger i walked in to that one with my eyes open.
