MG Midget and Sprite General - Moss springs
| My Moss 2.5" lowered reversed springs arrived today and I'm a bit unsure as if they will be right. The car already has 1.5" lower Peter May springs but I need it to be about an inch lower. The Peter May ones are only slightly curved when off the car and are flat when fitted. The new Moss ones not only look lower quality but seem way too curved even when you take into account they have reversed eyes. I also got the impression when they came into stock that they had been returned which may mean someone else thought they were wrong. Has anyone had any off Moss recently and can confirm they look the same as mine? Cheers John The Moss springs:

never seen reversed springs before. is that just to lower the ride hieght, if so i think i would just get lowering blocks, had them on my car for twenty years with no probs, i agree with tou that they look crap

Reverse eye springs are fairly common for lowering cars but not many offer them for the Midget. I am about 90% sure these will be going back (and I'll be demanding my postage costs back) so I suppose till I find some alternatives I will have to stick some blocks on. Don't want to as they can cause axle tramp (though they didn't on my car when they were fitted) and adding weight when I've spent a fortune trying to get rid of it will wind me up!

Just remembered, look at the picture in my third post, the centre tube in the bush is serrated. Never seen that before.

Hi John I take all my spring requirements to Brigg Springs Believe it or not they are in Brigg :) Let me know if you want your old ones rearching modifying, it will not be a problem I suspect.

If there is a thread which crops up too many times, it is the very poor quality and effectiveness of springs, particularly, semi-elliptics. I recently had a pair manufactured by a local "specialist" spring manufacturer. They collapsed within 10 miles and went straight back!! Could be the quality of the carbon steel, the section of the bar, but more likely the manufacture, particularly the hardening and tempering. The skills seem to have gone west, or east!!!!

Thanks Nigel :) I have had a few small batches of standard 1275 springs made so far. Currently none in stock. I will investigate prices for a batch of standard and could have some of these cambered to -1". All I need is a few willing customers to form an orderly que! They are UK manufactured to as high a quality as I can obtain here and are correctly tempered and load tested. I will also check to see if seriously reduced camber can be done. One thing to keep in mind is leaf springs are correct when they are flat, so a lower spring will need to be stiffer to maintain the correct flat state when at static load.

Clive I can't really take the credit I copied that recently off another post by someone else I did keep it for my reference though as I ended up with I beleive Moss springs last October so I don't know how soon I'll need the next set (the wife and I are no longer as light as we used to be) and I wanted good quality springs anyway but it all went wrong with a Spridget "specialist" (again)

Clive, What John wanted was -2.5", not -1". It was a matter of an inch lower than his current -1.5" Peter May springs were giving him. David "he must be trying to kill the sleeping policemen" Lieb

| Clive, put me on the list of people interested please! The Peter May springs I have are cambered so they are virtually flat when fitted weight on wheels. Off the car they are only slightly curved. I would imagine a spring with the same camber but with reversed eyes would equate to -2 to 2.5 inches (I realise all this of couse depends on the cars weight). I need the car sorting in the next few weeks so will probably have to stick some blocks on for now. Let me know if you get enough interest to get some made and I'll get back to you. My car isn't that low to be honest, in fact it's sits a lot higher than most of the other cars in its class. I've got rid of a fair bit of weight so it sits even higher now hence the need to sort the springs out. Cheers John
