MG Midget and Sprite General - Midget Rear Wings - Mk II
I was wondering if it is possible to use later model wings on the earlier Midgets? My Mk 2 midget needs both rear wings replacing, as the previous owner bodged them quite badly. I can get the original Mk 2 wings from Moss, but they are £450 - each!! I can get later (cheaper) wings for Mk 3 and onwards, but it appears the beading / lip for the hood arrangement is slightly different, although they look identical from the rear (light cluster, curvature etc.) The Mk 2 has far smaller lip by the B Post, and a small indentaton to allow the hood frame to be nserted into a slot just to the rear of the B post. Has anyone ever purchased the later wings and 'retro fitted' / modified the wings to fit an earlier Midget model? Can it be done?

Depends on what part of the wing is bad. If the top front (IE the different part) is good then you can use the later wing and graft on the repair. If you do it properly by making a nice lip and then spot weld it and after that very slowly one piece at a time seam weld it the distortion will be minimal and it will be a solid repair

The wing is in a reasonable condition as it was repaired by the previous owner. However the problem lies behind the wing and in particular with the B post, which has been incorrectly placed - I do not think I can remove the B post without severely damaging the wing - whilst the wing is good structurally / physically, the repair was of poor quality and 'lapped' quite badly over the B post, which was also contributing to the doors not fitting properly and binding between the wing edge and the door edge. Also the joggled edge on the rear of the panel has not been welded! Removing the lapping and bodged repair panels on the B post will likely distort the wing or leave a sharp edge to weld to the B post, as I will need to remove the lap. Not sure my welding is that neat! I did wonder if I could get the Mk3 wings, grind off the hood lip and cut a rebate to allow the hood poles to insert into their stay post. This would allow me to insert a replacement B post and wing at the same time - perhaps a cleaner and quicker procedure.
