MG Midget and Sprite General - Midget and Sprite Car jacks
Hi Just over from the MGA BBS. I have compiled a database on Shelley jacks (very sad) and am always on the look-out for more data. See this link on my website: http://www.mgaroadster.co.uk/shelley_jacks.htm Could someone please tell me what car jack(s) were supplied with the Midget and Sprite. Many thanks Steve

Hello Steve I do believe the Midget jack is the same as this one.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Austin-A35-Original-Steady-Lift-Jack-fits-A30-MG-Midget-Sprite-/230695520661?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item35b6864995 BTW, My old dad used to have loads of those Shelley type jacks but when he got Hydraulic types, the geared ones languished in the corner of the garage, they were left in the garage when my parents moved out of the house... Cheers, John :)

The A35 jack was wound-up by the starting handle (which had a hexagon socket in the handle end) Don't know about the Spridget version though as they had no starting handle. Dave

Dave I think the one in the link is what they were like, they had a small ratchet handle witha square hole to drive the jack ( I could be wrong though and usually am!!) Cheers, John :)

this is a Spridget jack, circa 1968

The ratchet for the Spridget jack shown in David Smith's image looks the same or vwery similar to the one on your list titled "Shelley - Austin Mini and Mini Cooper"
Gary & Gaps
The original stand that came with my Frog looks like the one in John's Ebay picture except that the base is straight across and the two side legs aren't as far apart.

Hi Steve, here is a photo of a frogeye tool kit I pinched from somewhere, I hope they don't mind, funnily enough I a kit just like it hiding in the garage along with my MGA one lol

Wind the bugger up and down and if not fitted correctly it either left a nice set of scars down the A pillar or shot out of the hole leaving the poor car on its hub and if very unlucky, trapping the operator under the bloody car...! Mark.

thats why when taking a wheel off you should always put the wheel under the sill so if it does fall... your hub or discs don't shatter!

Gordon Did you pinch the photo or the toolkit? ;o)
Dave O'Neill2
Hi Dave just shows one should read their posts before leaving them lol, it was only the picture I can assure you Gordon

Thought you had sold the MGA Gordon?
Rob Flint
Hi Rob if you mean the one in the profile photo that was one I had in 1974 long gone but still around I think gordon

Intriguingly, the screw jacks supplied with most pick up trucks today are very much like those Shelly jacks, except that the gears are now enclosed inside Norm

Was the jack painted to match the car when it left the factory ??? Ive seen them in various colors, mine (exactly like davids photo) is powder blue color... Well more beat up light blue wih losts of black on it.... But may car was orginally a light blue color ... Same as the jack Ive seen the jacks in black, blue, red, and yellow...although the yellow is a rarity. Prop

Mine is identical to Davids - 1970 Aus assembled Midget, parts could have been from 68-70 for this car, as most of the bits were sent to Aus in '68 (from what I've read anyway).
