MG Midget and Sprite General - MG Midget Mk2 tonneau
Hi all, I am looking at purchasing a tonneau for my Mk2 midget, I am on a fairly tight budget so I am just looking for a cheapo one. alternately I would be interested in a second hand one provided it was on good condition. Any advice on these would be welcomed. I am also after a rear view mirror for the midget but am unsure which sort to buy as there a few different varieties, I would be grateful of some assistance with that too. Finally I am interested in a hard top for my midget, how much should I expect to pay for one ? Cheers, Will

Hi Will A tonneau will cost new from about £100 , although they do occasionally come up on ebay. Try the Moss to see which rear view mirror you need then most likely buy one elsewhere (usually cheaper). I paid £50 for my MKII hard top in need of repair but I have seen them go for over £100 recently on ebay. There is one on there at the moment, not too far away from you http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-Midget-hard-top-/160681597295?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item25695e996f#ht_500wt_1054 Cheers Tony

Thanks, I've now ordered the mirror. I am thinking of getting a tonneau from here : http://www.donhoods.com/ anyone got one from there before ? I shall have a look at that hard top, how rare are Mk2 midget hard tops ?

Rather rare

I bought a tonneau for my MkII from Don earlier this year and am very happy with it. I had the best quality vinyl as I use it all the time rather than the hood, so cannot comment on the cheaper ones. Just be aware that if you have an original with the side zips and flaps to fasten it behind the seat, they don't come with these now (I think all manufacturers are the same to keep the cost down), but if you want them and send your old one they will make one to your pattern. I don't know if you know, but as you are in Hants they have a place in Southampton as well as Birmingham, so if you are near there you could pick it up to save postage. Trev

Will, That hard top on ebay is a bargain. It looks like the double skinned works hard top to me. I have one for my Mkiv. I paid 100 quid 25 plus years ago and that was a bargain too. I Wouldn't worry about a bad paint job at all. Main thing is that all the glass is in it. I don't know if there is a difference between the mk2 and 3/4. But I don't think so as the only part number for the works I can find is GSS156. So I'd snap that up if I were you.

The mk3 one wont fit the mk2 as the rear shroud is totaly different

Midgets will only fit Mk 1 - Mk 1; Mk 2 - Mk 2; Mk3-4 same. Lawrence has a Sprite and they are numbered differently! If it's far away, then you'll have to take your chances since he doesn't like he'll confirm it, but if it's close enough, go and see it and try! Mk2 Midget is more rounded for the tourneau than Mk3-4. Hope that helps to clear it up for you :) Good luck in both your searches - although, Don Hoods are meant to be pretty good, so you could likely go further and fare worse.

Mk 2 tonneaux fit at the back under the two lugs that normally secure the hood. I you see one one on eBay or anywhere else with a row of studs across the back, it is for the later cars and will not fit a mk 2. Bernie.

Yes, that's right. Mine's a MK4 sprite = MK3 Midget. Shame if it won't fit a MK2 midget. Is there no way to fill the gap at the back? I don't ever recall seeing a different works h/top for the earlier ones. Maybe the one I have was only introduced with the later Mk3/4s then? Either way, at the current price, somebody might well get a bargain.

Sorry that hardtop is for a mk3 midget You can dived all types of tops and toneaus in 3 groups from midget mk2 sprite ( frog is yet again different) Gr1 is for spridgets with removable windows Gr2 is for the detachable hood with wind up windows Gr3 is the fixed hood cars Each group has it's own top hardtop and toneau

Thanks for that, I will purchase a tonneau from don trimmings then. If that hardtop won't fit does anyone else have one available that will ? Cheers, Will

Hi Will, not sure but will a Mark 1 (Gan 2) hard top fit the Mark 2 as well??? Does anyone know? I have a shell of one with no fixings that you can have for free if you want to come and get it......I'm in Hampshire near Southampton. I had it on ebay a couple of weeks ago but the guy only wanted the fixings. The shell it structurally sound but needs a bit of work to make it look pretty. I think I've got a rear window rubber knocking around as well. A perspex rear window wouldn't be hard to make. Cheers, Ali.

Looking at Onno's comment again I'm not sure it will. Mine has the sidescreens so I'm guessing yours is a wind up window so probably not.

Does not fit window shape is different
Onno Könemann
Thanks for the offer Ali, sadly it sounds like the hard top wouldn't fit. You can't be too far from me though where are you located ? I will get a tonneau for now and look out for a hard top. Mirror arrived today and is already fitted. Cheers, Will

Pity. Would have like it to have gone to a good home. I'm in Chandler's Ford, so if you've seen a pale blue mark one whizzing about it was probably me. Where about are you? Ali.
Ali- Midget Mk1 1098
so you know sway near lymington ? I'm located there. Watch out for a red mk2 midget :)
W Armston-Sheret
:-) I must say I don't get down that way too often but if I do I'll watch out for you.

Another h/top on ebay. Owner doesn't describe what it fits. Looks like a factory mk4 sprite mk3 midget from the back though. 40 quid. You'll have to email the owner and ask what it came from. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/mg-midget-hard-top-/120811156708?_trksid=e11010.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%252BDDSIC%26otn%3D10%26pmod%3D160681597295%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D4325638000143398586

I never understand people who advertise on Ebay but are to lazy to make a few decent pictures! It just seems to me that you don't realy want to sell it then
Onno Könemann
Thanks Chaps, Although the one pictured looks like a Mk3 hard top I am looking for a mk2 one which is alas proving to be rare. Anyone have one out there ? Cheers, Will
