MG Midget and Sprite General - LUCAS COIL HA12 OR 11C

The MG Midget / Austin Healey Sprite has been fitted with various Lucas Coils. Can anyone tell me the difference between a Lucas HA12 and a Lucas 11C coil and also changeover dates?

The HA12 was fitted earlier but later superseded by 11C12. The HA12 is shown as the fitment for the MG 1300 saloon and MGB but LA12 FOR THE MORRIS 1300 but THE MORRIS 1300GT is fitted with the HA12 Coil!

LA12 is a "standard" c20kv coil,
HA12 is "high output" c30kv
SA12 is "Sports = very high output" c40kv

The coil only puts out what is needed to fire the plugs, so these maximums are generally not met, but higher compression and higher engine speeds MAY use some of the additional potential output. That's why the "sports" models used the HA rather than LA. The "Sports" labeled SA12 is for racing or modified engines, or boy racers.

11C12 is probably either just a design change or possibly an intermediate stage between LA & HA.
For changeover dates you may have to find Lucas documentation of the period, since Lucas were in the habit of superseding parts and then dropping the supersession sequence from parts lists after a very short time.

The final digits in coil models is the design voltage, so anything ending in 12 is for a non ballasted 12V system. Anything ending in 6 or 7 is for a ballasted system, ie it only gets the design voltage for normal running, but gets full 12V for starting.

Lucas parts have date codes ww/yy on them if that concerns you.
