MG Midget and Sprite General - Lamp fitting names....LED
Having a spell of broken bulbs I now want to switch to LED bulbs. Having done some research I found several shops and solutions like other indicator flashers to thake the lack of resistance. But I do not know the names of the bulb fittings! So can you help with the names of. -Indicator bulb -brake/rear light bulb -front driving light bulb And the small tubilair bulb found in the interior lamp.

Over here they are numeric 1156, 1157. The interior bulb is a "festoon".... maybe?

Onno, I don't think these people do LED replacements, but their lists of ordinary bulbs are very clear and might help you to identify the code numbers for the ones you are looking for: http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/lighting/bulbs.php What I was really looking for was the URL for a company that sells the LED equivalents. I thought I had it bookmarked, but now I cannot find it.

Onno Haven't tried them myself, but look at "ultraleds.co.uk" they seem to have our types of bulbs Keith

Onno, my mates used some various types of LEDs on his 1969 Rover I can't say I was that impressed with any of them I've had the odd bulb go black but I can't think of blown or broken bulbs on my cars at all really, I've given away far more bulbs than I've ever used - perhaps there is a fault causing your bulbs' demise(?) of course the owners Handbook gives bulb numbers but some have been superceded, at least in the UK, to more commonly used bulbs the interior/reverse/boot bulbs are known as "festoon" but I'm not sure that's the correct name

My wife's japanese car was feasting on bulbs for no apparant electrical reason. Her journey to work is over numerous speed humps and rough roads so I drew the conclusion that she was bouncing the bulds to oblivion due to shaking. It was the side and side tail / brake bulbs that were involved. the headlamp bulbs were seemingly up to the job. I converted her car to LED's and to date I have not had to change a bulb. Stafford Vehicle components (SVC) have a display when at exhibitions of the speed of illumination of a normal bulb against LED. The LED is faster thus with a brake light projecting the warning quicker. So impressed have I been that both my Sprites now have LED stop tail lights. The LEDs may not be legal on later cars that may need an E marking but then who is going to check them. I have also converted the dashboard gauge lights to LEDs where they give a rather pleasant bluish glow. I have not yet found an LED suitable for the front side / indicator or rear indicator bulb. No problems have been experienced with any of the vehicles passing thru' the MOT. Alan

Onno Have you checked your dynamo/alternator output?

my mate had the rear/brake as LED but under the red lenses I couldn't see it was much better but any increase in visability of a classic's rear at night is a good idea to me as the (1969) Rover has such a large rear number plate I'd have had that as yellow reflective as that would standout even when parked with the lights off Onno, have you factored in cheap/poor made bulbs I once spent ages sorting out a neighbours brake light, to cut a long story short the break filament on the new replacement bulb would break itself off, thus not working, when hot but would then rejoin itself when cool again to break off when hot - some cheap east-european bulb I think by the markings

Dynamo output is fine and I do not consider philips to be a bad brand. I guess it is just time to replace as one normaly has to do after several years of hard work. I must admit it is for both the GT and midget and there are several reasons to want to go to LED -the switch to relaised Halogen head lamps has been such an improvement the others ar starting to look dim in comparison. -Winter driving in the GT with radio, lights, heater, wipers and iphone charger can even with an alternator be a strain for the battery -longer life expectancy The current breaking of bulbs and having no more spares is only the last incentive to finaly do it
Onno K
no I don't count Phillips as east-european let us know how you get on with the LED bulbs and how good the light seems when under the rear lenses despite the way it seems I have an open mind (on most things) >>Winter driving in the GT with radio, lights, heater, wipers and iphone charger can even with an alternator be a strain for the battery<< Winter driving in the GT without radio, heater and iphone charger with an alternator isn't a strain for the battery :)
Nigel Atkins
Yes Nigel But try to explane that to the better half.... I'll see if I can find some soon and take some picks to compare
Onno K
hat, scarf, gloves and a lyric sheet should keep her happy she should warm up scrapping the windows and pushing the car if you get stuck we're just too easy with 'em and they don't appreciate it :)
Nigel Atkins
:) side light -BA9S Indicators -BA15S Rear/brake -BA15D took some measuring and a few frozen fingers ;)
Onno K
Onno, you should have said, two minutes with the owners Handbook in the warm with the drink and background music of choice and I could give you (UK car at least) GLB 989 side lamp front and rear 5w – BA9s (MCC) GLB 382 direction indicator 21w - BA15s GLB 380 stop/tail 5/21w - BAY15d (offset pins) I'll add others if you want after tea

orderd some bulbs let's see how it goes
Onno K
I was hoping to change my dash lights to red led but can't find the equivalent bulb. The current incandescent bulbs are GLB987/Stanpart 59492, 2.2W E10 small edison screw. I have been able to locate white led and blue led, but no red. Because these are to go in the gauges, they will need to be wide-angle, not pinpoint led. Does anyone have a source? Steve
