MG Midget and Sprite General - knock from suspension??
I have a knocking noise from the underside of my MG Midget 1500 1977.I have replaced my shackle pin bushes and rear shocker.I cannot find anything underneath the car that is loose or worn. I have checked all leaf spring bushes but still have this knocking noise, can anybody give me ideas or experiences with this type of fault. Thanks

When does it knock? On bumpy roads or on power on / off moments

It knocks on slightly eratic driving and on poor road surfaces.

Are the shock bolts nice and tight? Have you checked the exhaust system for looseness or interference? Best of luck, -:G:-

Gryf, thanks I appreciate your input as I am looking to see if I have missed anything . I have checked all these things and all appears to be good. Thought it might be something to do with the leaf spring but can't see anything untowards. cheers

Another vote with Gryf's shocker bolts When you take them off the anti-wotsit rubbery stuff, you know the stuff a bit like underseal that hates to be scraped off, tends to creep a little. Then when they are replaced the shock body doesn't "quite" line up with the hole in the rubber it came off of. You bolt everything up really tight, even tighter than you think. Then drive the car and get a clonk/some clonks from behind and below. This is the shock body taking up space it hasn't really lost and moving. All sounds like the ravings of a man deeply into a few cans of sustenance, sadly not, I havent started yet :) Give the bolts on the shocks an even bigger heave down, bet they turn a litle more.

If the shock mount bolts don't solve the problem then I have one other suggestion. Well actually two, first the rubber bushings in the shock link could be worn causing the knocking, and second perhaps there's something loose in the boot that's causing the noise, especially something that might have fallen down behind the wheel well in the lower portion of the wing. Take everything you can find out of the boot and then try a short drive and see if that helps.

I appreciate all your commemts and unfortunately the noise was there prior to my changing of the shocker. I think I may have to change the front leaf spring bush, failing that I am totally baffled. cheers

| Hello there I have the same problem and always have. I have learned to live with it like everything else! I have recently changed the rear springs and fitted new bushed everywhere and its still there. Next job is new shocks, hoping that might cure it but I am not convinced! Any help would be great. | How about exhuast knocks against something on the axle when suspension deflects... (not quite sure re 1500 ex routing, but perfectly possible on Aseries cars...) A |
