MG Midget and Sprite General - king pin reamer

Does anyone own a king pin reamer, and if so, could you take a photo of it please.

Also, can someone tell me what the bushes are made of, I'm assuming Phozzy Bronze... but can someone confirm or deny this please.

Have you found one Christian?

These were sold back in 2008, I took the pics from the web.

Someone on here will recognise them as I believe someone on here bought them. :)

Check these out.

Love your thinking.

A friend of mine and I were thinking the same. Essentially use 2 pilotted reamers... should align just fine... would prefer the stepped reamer... but its not essential - definitely not worth £240

now cue the comments of disgust from the purists!

Moss do it for less. 18G1006A King Pin Reamer £158.95

But I still think that's rip off.

I've been trying to find the exact dimensions of the 18G1006A.

Does anyone know them?
Lawrence Slater

Perhaps I should buy one - and rent it out to those who need it!

I think the adjustable reamer will do the trick. But if you intend to keep the car as long as I've kept mine, then even 150 quid might be a good investment, if you get through enough kingpins/bushes.

And, if you can make a bit of dough on the side, by doing others, === for a price?

Moss are now charging £80+ per side for exchange rebuilt stub axles. It can only get more expensive in the future.

You can buy a Pin set for less then 25 quid per side. I'm actually thinking of buying a spare set of pins and geting hold of a reamer as an investment.

I have to tear mine down soon too, so this interests me.

And there is the pleasure of doing yourself. :)

I have the proper reamer now, but the last time I did mine I didn't, and used adjustable reamers (dead cheap on flea bay), and a Heath Robinson pilot system. I was shown this method by a relative who had a company making bits for Rolls Royce and Marconi weapons systems, I figured if it was good enough for a real engineer...
The purists did have a go at me here, but those king pins/bushes are still fine after seven years of proper regular use and I'm pretty neglectful with the grease (or gear oil) gun.

Hi Paul,

Would you mind posting the measurements of the proper reamer?
Lawrence Slater

And if you can, I'd like to know more about your pilot system... any photos?
C L Carter

It's 7.5" long excluding squared top, 4"x0.618" top bush bit 3.5"x0.771" bottom bit.
You'd best check it's not a drum brake size (they're different) because I've never bothered and I've not used it yet. I was given it, the local garage said they weren't likely to need it again, (they gave me an old 1500 as well, scrap but lots of useful bits).

The pilot system was rod, sleeve and conical sleeves to centre things, easy to make with a lathe, I have used assorted scrap and sockets pre lathe owning days. I'm not even sure that was worth the bother (sorry, that'll really upset the proper engineers).
Paul (MkI

Hi Paul,

Just to confirm,

You don't know if your reamer is the correct tool for drum brakes axles, or for disc brake axles.

Does anyone know the differences in dimension between the two types regarding the Kingpin?

Lawrence Slater

I'll check this evening, I've always assumed and never yet needed to test this, will take seconds as a few stub axles lying about.
Paul MkIMkIV

I was told that the drum brakes have the same size bushings top and bottom, but the disc brake cars have two different size top and bottom. Is that correct?
Trevor Jessie

Yes to disc axles having different size bushings top and bottom.

So if that's right about the drum axles having the same size bushings, then Pauls' reamer is a disc version, as it's stepped, and thus, those are the dimensions needed to compare to an adjustable reamer. :)
Lawrence Slater

Just checked, it is the correct disc brake type stub axle reamer.
Paul
Paul MkIMkIV

Great, thanks Paul. Wanna sell it? :)

Else, with your measurements, I'll take a closer look at the adjustable reamer offerings.
Lawrence Slater

Sorry, no, I'll need it one day, shame Kent's no where near Cumbria.
As I recall I got a nice set of adjustables for less than £20.00
Paul
Paul MkIMkIV

Yup, it would cost me the price of a new reamer to come up there and use yours lol.

I'll buy a new Moss reamer, and charge anybody £25 per side for you to come and use my reamer.

Anybody interested? :)

Lawrence Slater

It would cost me the price of a new reamer plus the £25 to come down there and use yours. !
Guy

Yeah but you are close to Paul, so you can use his if he'll let you. :)
