MG Midget and Sprite General - interesting SU Question

If the float gasket between the lid and the chamber is wornout and leaking badly...okay fuel is flowing out like a river...

Would that prevent the fuel from being pushed down the jet tube and into the carb ????

All indications are the jet hose is clogged AGIAN, it fires on starter spray then dies .. floats are working fine...BUT IM hoping its just because these gaskets are worn out....its just a huge freaken pain to pull the carbs off tear down and clean and reassemble

Btw will a large O ring make for a good gasket in place of the float lid to chamber paper composit gasket...i thought i might try it before wasting an hour making one

Yeah... There well beyound the silicon repair stage

Thanks guys

Prop,
sounds like your needle valves are sticking/not seating/full of c**p. All the time and money and SWEAT and TEARS you have spent on this black hole/engine take the time to ensure the carbs are OK. No engine is going to run properly unless the mixture and the timing are correct. If fuel is leaking out between the top and the float body the fuel level is far too high therefore the engine will have an over rich mixture, usually it will stop. Check the needle valves for sticking / leaking and set the levels, there is a web site telling you how to do this. Fit new gaskets and see what happens. Or get your carbs overhauled professionally.

Yeah the gaskets are completely shot... The float needles are working fine, but im not getting any fuel from the needle jet. So im fearing the jet hoses are cloged... So im thinking the fuel cant hold any pressure to run thur the tube and into the carb
Prop

Doh... Your correct.... Something is a miss if the fuel is getting that high... I bet there is more ethonal gunk where the needle meets the seat
Prop

Then again

If the hose is clogged ... Could that not cause a back pressurer on the float needle and forcing the fuel out the weakest link on the float chamber

Hey Prop,

If the hose IS clogged shouldn't you consider WHAT has clogged the hose?

You don't want to just treat the symptoms and not the illness! right?

Hope you get it fixed.

If the float bowl vents are clear, there is NO pressure in the bowls. Pressure is just to get fuel to the bowls, after that it is at atmospheric, with the level controlled by the floats. If the cover gaskets are leaking more than just damp, the fuel level is too high. On several thousand carbs over 50 years, I've never replaced a cover gasket except on routine rebuilds.

If you think the jet tubes are blocked:
remove float bowl covers, remove vac chambers and pistons. Blow compressed air backwards through the jet and all crap will come out the float bowl. Best to soak up any standing fuel, and Cover the float chamber with a rag and put out your cigar first!

Thanks guys

Yeah ... As much as i hate to admit it, its another tear down clean and re-assemble....i hate this fuel situation, this ethonal mess is rally kicking me good, i just got the fuel pump working agian just a few days ago ...i just cant seem to get over the hump, i can almost disassemble clean and recunstruct the entire fuel system just like the seal team 6 can with there M 16s and a blind fold

FRM...hahaha... A cigar, now thats funny....that could cure my fuel system issues real fast....ae well as my uni a brow.

Thanks guys... I was just hoping i could phone this one in and just be lazy about it, but it looks like i wont have to worried about being bored with nothing to do any time soon
