MG Midget and Sprite General - Insurance renewal price hike
Hi, had my renewal notice from Footman James today and the price has gone up from £125 to £170 which seems like too big an increase. Has anyone else found this recently? I have been with FJ since I had the car approx 6 years ago as I always thought the price was reasonable but will definately be phoning around this time. Thanks Mark

get a quote from pd james insurance and it will be cheaper. if you want to stay with footman james phone them up and tell them you had cheaper quote from pdj. pdj used to own footman james. bob.

Got mine from a broker Frank Pickles in Otley, Yorkshire. Have been paying £99 for the past 3 years. Jeremy

My insurance went DOWN considerably (over half the price) last renewal. Was with Footman James. Have you tried a new quote rather than renewing? 'cos you often get shafted as a returning customer (who knows why)...
Rob Armstrong
you could try Peter James

what Rob says ask for a quote query the price then say OK I'm off, bye bye

£94.50 through MG insurances Services, Lancaster insurance. Full comp including 14 days free car rental and full EU cover. '66 sprite, 1275, 5 speed box declared. Dont pay over the odds. The longer you stay with the same insurer the more the price ticks up. You have to check every year in general, but not always. I always do though.

Hi all, thanks for the tips. I will get onto this. The car is delared as having a sports manifold/exhaust and air filter and a HIF44 carb. The FJ quote covers me for unlimited mileage and to drive any other car 3rd party. 30 days euro cover and breakdown cover. Will report back once I have some other prices. Mark

Mark Do make sure you tell the insurer (whoever) all the changes from standard spec They can and do use any un-notifed changes to refuse to pay out on any claims Classicline (and FJ who I insured with before they raised their prices) have the full list of changes on my car, just to be sure ;)
Bill 1
no problem with modifications on Peter James, you just list them on the form and the next year list the changes well below £125 but difficult to compare prices with other owners my cover includes; modifications ungaraged car unlimited mileage agreed valuation 3rd party cover with other cars motor legal expenses UK & European breakdown recovery (with home start)

Yes good point Nigel Classicline dont care what you have done but they do require the list so they are insuring the car you drive not one in a showroom forty years ago No extra charge for the alterations either

My broker informed me recently that they have a new "classic" insurance provider (Haggerty),and hit me with a large increase for yearly coverage! $103 dollars a year in the past, now $166 annually. Sign on the dotted line,or go without. That is robbery, corporate style.
Ken
Hi, heres an update: Spoke to FJ and they said that all policies have increased by 40-60%. By lowering my annual mileage from unlimited to 3000 per year (still won't hit this limit) the price with FJ will drop from £171 to £140. In comparison Lancaster quoted £152 but with a higher XS (£100 vs £50) and Peter Best quoted me £156 but won't be able to drive other cars 3rd party. Still need to try Peter James, Classsicline and a few others Will keep you posted Mark
Mark Whitmore
if you try Peter James you could go to the web site http://www.peterjamesinsurance.co.uk/ and fill in the 'Call Me and give me a quote' box at the bottom of their web Home page and let them contact you (normal office hours only - 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday)

Was that a very recent increase? I got mine in March this year. Also of course probably depends on age and previous claims/accidents I imagine. I have no claims or convictions, and I'm old. LOL.
Lawrence Slater
Been through this in the last 2 weeks.Same story.MGF VVC.With SAGA( you know, the old folks insurers).Last year £152.Says to guy,ok 1 more years NCB(er,yes),car depreciated by another year( er,yes)and only done 1500 miles this year( er,yes)so why has the premium gone up 28%? No thanks, switched to Adrian Flux at £136. Same story with my Renault Clio.Brand new last year £209.This years renewal £ 237.No thanks.Gone with AA at £175. And tell them so.Otherwise they'll keep trying it on and on. If these firms make out they are losing so much on car insurance, how may have left the business? OK I accept that claims may well have gone up.But not by me and I fail to see why I should pay for other peoples claims.

Peter James is a waste of time - they don't even want to know you if you don't garage your car - not quite sure how Nigel got through that one - if they can't be bothered to do it online - why should I have them selling over the phone! Too young for Saga - and would hate to admit it if I weren't :P
rachmacb
rach I got through with no effort what so ever as they rang me from me filling in two boxes at the bottom of the Home page as I put earlier an application on a web site is normally a general thing and can't cover too many aspects as the forms and links would go on far too long for most people's patience whatever quotation you get with doing it over a web site you're still normally best to ring them (if they have a freephone number) or let them ring you as you'll probably get a lower price than web quote there's no pressure selling with Peter James I wish i'd gone to them as soon as I bought my Midget as I'd have saved a considerable percent on the premiums I paid elsewhere and gotten a better coverage with them other providers are available :) but not all at such good value :)
Nigel At
And they aren't there when I have time to talk - I ain't a BT advert!!!! Seems such a shame that they rule it out for such a silly little reason though - it's not like I live in a town either!
rachmacb
After years with Lancaster I changed to Adrian Flux last year and saved a few quid.
J D Smith
Classicline up £20 this year. Time for a ring-around...
Jordan Gibson
Jordon see my last post but one you could ring them or let them ring you, but how would they get through to you if your on the phone to others, oh, you ring them let us know how you get on please
Nigel At
Frank Pickles sorted me for £103, but I had to lose our lass off the policy. She's never driven it in five years, but I bet a get chewed out anyway!
Jordan Gibson
Note: you can't compare one person to another on car insurance I paid 62p more in June for all the cover listed above/below and it includes my wife but as she's only driven the car three times in 4 years perhaps it might be cheaper to excluded her my original sized steering wheel catches her belly and is close to her thighs so she doesn't like driving it :)
Nigel At
Hi, just a quick update. I renewed with Classicline as FJ wouldn't budge on their price. Paid £119 with breakdown/European cover/drive other cars 3rd party. All mods are covered and it didn't make a bit of difference to the policy as they quoted me via an internet enquiry and then asked me what mods had been made when I called up to accept the policy. All in all very friendly and helpful (hopefully it will be the same level of service should the worst happen) Thanks Mark

Question for Nigel. What's the position regarding your very admirable "Sporting Bears" activities at the upcoming NEC show? As you are giving people rides in your car for a donation to charity, does this not come under the "for hire or reward" part of an insurance policy, from which one is usually excluded, or do passengers have to sign a disclaimer before they get in? I'm sure you wouldn't do anything illegal, I was just interested. Bernie.
b higginson
you're not giving 'hire or reward' any more than if you offer a stranger a lift the charitable donation is entirely seperate I could refuse to give a certain person the ride for whatever reason I wanted passengers sign a disclaimer against the club for the event not the ride as such, the passenger(s) can sue me and/or my insurance in the normal way should there be an accident I only put recently that in the 14 years I've been attending we've had hundreds of different cars but I've only heard of a handful where their insurance, quite wrongly, said no as some of you will know and have experienced life is too short to argue with insurance companies that don't fully train their staff - at least three that I know of changed their insurance provider because of this here is a link to info provided to help drivers, passengers and insurance companies understand, it also leads to many other pages with many other links covering Sporting Bears Dream Rides http://www.sportingbears.org.uk/DreamRides/DreamRides_DriverNotes.htm Lawrence would love all the forms and paperwork that goes with the events and especially the NEC's zealous H&S officer :)

Insurance premiums have increased this year due to the severe winter and the number of accidents. Oh no here we go again, I'm not re-opening that can of worms.
