MG Midget and Sprite General - Insurance
Argh.... French regulations.... Till July, insurances accepted some mods on classic cars. I do not know what happened, but now for my GAN1 project, they refuse: - period Ashley front end - front dik with 1098cc master cylinder - LHD conversion - Datsun 5 speeds gear box They want I restore the midget only as original. In that case, I have look for parts for years, and now my project is stopped: www.spritemidget.com Do I have to resale the datsun box and the front end? Argh......If I had a bomb to put in the insurance company. Why front disk is less safer than drums? Welcome to France. laurent

I'm told the same is true in Spain. How long until it happens here in the UK?

Is this only classic insurance or do you refer to all general car insurance? Are you saying that you have insurance legislation that prevents you modifying an old car? Who decides if a car is classic in France and Spain? Is it on age?

In France, you can have an old car with normal V5 and usable as a normal car. You can have a Classic car V5, for cars are more than 30 years old. But for insurance, you can have an insurance as for modern car or a classic car insurance. So you can have a classic car insurance for a new Ferrari (because it is not a "normal" car), and a normal insurance for a midget if you want to use it daily. But in any case, to insure a car, now you have to prove the car is like homologation when sold new in France. If there is a crash and you have modify the car, the insurance can say: I do not insure the ca and you are considere to have no insurance with all the bad effects. I do not know one Austin Mini not modify... 75% of the people have illegal classic cars!!!!!

Then my car, and I suspect many of those here, are doomed if that bit of nonsensical legislation comes to the UK. And judging by just how much of what happens over there, also happens over here lately, the future looks less than rosey. Our politicos won't fight it that's for sure.

Finally, my insurance accepts the LHD conversion, the front disk brake and the Ashley front end. So I will have to resale the Datsun box with rivergate kit.

| Sounds like a lot of folks and especially your clubs need to get in touch with SEMA in the US. It started and is still primarily a trade group of aftermarket suppliers,, but since their business depends on our ability to modify and use our cars, they are on our side. They fight all this stuff and probably have some experience in other parts of the world. http://www.sema.org/government-affairs The numbers of idiots who have some personal reason to hate car enthusiasts is astonishing, and a lot of them seem to be politicians, or politically active enough to sneak all sorts of crap through.
