MG Midget and Sprite General - Hunker down Prop!
Prop, as if you and our other friends in the Midwest US have not had enough, it looks like you're getting hit with a brutal winter storm. Looks like it is supposed to be -7 degrees F. tomorrow night in Jeff City! You might lose your internet connection as the electrons freeze in the wires!! Have you wrapped the Black Hole in an electric blanket? Do they have snow chains for Midgets??!! Hang in there. Spring is just around the corner...
Jack Orkin
Prop I hope you have strong enough mix of antifreeze in all your rigs, gotta protect those engines!!
Rick Bastedo
| Thanks guys Yepp engie has 50/50 mix anti, 75 miles on the clock and tucked away in the shop out of the elements, topped off with oil, .. so should be okay But I havent seen it this bad in probably 18 years. Im a little more concerned about our friends in st louis... gryf, Don G, bill fox, bruce hamper, miz/mis, ect ect... the got slamed with ice my mom was guessing about 5 inches... so i fear loss of electric for them... at -7 F. that aint good. here are some pics. this is what I woke up to... these are my construction cans there full size... they disappeared in the snow about 2 hours ago

| here is me stepping in it... Im actually wearing boots and the snow is up to my thigh just short of where the good lord split me.

| It took 10minutes before this idiot arived ... this is 54 hwy... 4 lanes and fairly busy... I dont ever recall WAITING to see a car on this freeway. esp in ither direction needless to say ... the silence is a little un-nerving

Not sure if you can see the road in front of my house... it had just been plowed an hour before I took this photo.

Btw Jack... yeah my old internet has only worked about 3 days over the last 2 weeks... I really love this smartphone ... I have it connected to the lap top, so far no issues, I went ahead and paid the price for the full versions today and got oit set-up... took a bit of work, but I was the one that was screwing up the installation... its still as fast as the lite version was, but now I can access my email and other social media sites... like tweeter and face book.. not that im into that But it is really nice to have working high speed internet when the temps are below 35... and having 2 sepeate internet connections arnet half bad I MUST SAY. So I guess Ill dump the old (non-funtional) one later this week apperatly getting my land based business phone number ported to my cell phone is going to take a little longer I guess. Prop

In a way, I guess we're lucky. So far, the worst of the storm has dodged us. But it really depends on how far north or south you are, here in the Midwest. We just got a light glazing of ice due to freezing rain before the sleet started. Other areas were being warned of up to an inch of ice all over everything, and that's never good. The sleet then turned everything white, then the snow moved in. But again, to the north the snow's a lot worse, and to the south, the ice is heavier. Not only did they cancel classes in the school district where I work, they also told all support staff (such as yrs trly) to stay home too, and we'd be paid normally. So even though we didn't get the worst of it, this is still a nasty bit of weather. -:G:-

We were on the western edge of the storm here in KC, only got about 9 to 10 inches of the white stuff yesterday and last night. Driving home from work yesterday was a bit difficult as the city hadn't started plowing yet, but this morning it was fine, just very cold.
B Young
| South Florida got hit bad with this one. Temps plunged to the low 60's last nite and we woke up this morning to waist deep sand, and blinding sunshine. I'll get my hat (the sun is burning my scalp!!!)

Yeah but we dont have huge hurricans, bull sharks in the local waters or 20ft crocks living in our swimming pools around here ...lol Well the snow plow came back thur early this morning....looks around 5 feet high i have to dig away from the end of the drive way...now we just have to survive the brutle cold for the next 7 days

And here in NC it's 70 today!!
chuckc
We got about a quarter-inch of ice on trees & cars, then about an inch of sleet, and maybe an inch of snow. Non-event here...

We got 20 inches here in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago (thank goodness we don't get Chicago's "lake effect" snow!). Light powdery snow that blew and drifted all over. I got motivated enough yesterday that I took the time last night to rearrange things in the garage enough so that I could get my GTi daily driver into the garage as well as all four Spridgets and several bicycles. Yeah, it IS a bit crowded, but I didn't have to try to carve a car out of a drift today. It was bad enough finding the driveway. I bought a Garand 27" sleigh shovel this year. Pricey, but it sure works well (look it up on Amazon if you have never seen one). It holds a LOT of snow and you can just slide it over the drifts and dump it wherever you want. Temperature hung around 20F all day, so I didn't need to bother with shoes or boots, just go in occasionally and thaw out the feet. Cleared my nice long driveway, then went over to Trish's and helped her dig out from under. David "feel free to send that 70 over any time" Lieb

We ended up with somewhere around 18 inches. I really don't know how they figure it out when there's a 50 mph wind blowing. 5 foot drifts and the dog realy didn't like it out last night. Burned out all the belts on my snowblower too. I guess they needed to be replaced after 10+ years. On the up side, my schoolteacher wife got two snow days out of it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/59042772@N07/ Hey Dave, I want pictures of you shoveling without shoes!
Tim Michnay
BTW it's also supposed to be about -10 tonight!
Tim Michnay
Tim, I was too busy shoveling to waste time on pictures, but Trish's neighbor took some, so I will try to see if I can get them. BTW, it was a "Garant" shovel, not "Garand". Now if only my shoulder wasn't so sore from trying to get my ancient snowthrower to start only to find that the new belts I put on a couple years ago are slipping. Too annoyed with it by then to see why... David "nice to see some sunshine today" Lieb
David Lieb
| Boy, those are some pictures Tim..... Reminds me of our 'infamous' Blizzard of '77, here in Buffalo. 5 feet of snow with sub-zero temps.....Hope I only see one of those in my life. Paul

Paul, No offense intended, but Buffalo seems to get a LOT of snow dumped on them every year and every year the people seem to be surprised. Just why does anyone live there during the winter? Chicagoland lives a charmed life and much of what we are supposed to get detours around us. The 20" we got yesterday is as opposed to the 44" they were predicting for us when the storm had already started. Glad they were wrong! The problem we have been having for four winters now is that global warming has made us a few degrees COLDER than we used to be so that the snow is not melting away in between storms. It used to be that most of the precipitation in December was rain at 33 degrees, but the last few winters it has been snow at 31 degrees or so. Caught all the municipalities out the first time and they used up all of their salt before the "real" winter got here. Salt prices went so high that it was cheaper to send a truck several hundred miles south to buy salt than to buy it locally. David "should be back in the 20s this weekend" Lieb

Hey david, Are you and trish still togather? I got the context you went back to your single wild lifestyle....hahaha Its good to know you guys are missing it up there, ive been thinking of you guys up there ....saw where lake shore dr got shut down for 2-3 days. Wall to wall abaondoned cars. They actually shut down I-70 from just up the road from me to St. louis

David, The explanation is that global warming puts more energy into the atmosphere. This results in greater pressure difference = higher winds, more storms. Plus greater evaporation = higher precipitation. Its the increased extremes of weather that catch us all out.
Guy
David, is that you with your shirt off in the snow? http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/offbeat/2011/02/03/moos.ny.snowzilla.cnn (heh)

Paul, Hope that you don't have one of those coming this weekend. I'm flying in for a few days starting Sun. First goal is to find the nearest bar (in the hotel) with the game on... GO PACKERS!!!!!
