MG Midget and Sprite General - how to set up a gymkana....parking lot racing ???

Hey guys

Here is one we havent talked about before.

What all is involved and how do you go about setting up a gymkana, auto solo, parking lot races...esp for an event that dosnt already exist

In my home town we have a large car dealership that has folded its doors about a year ago, and there is a massive parking lot with nothing but light poles.... And there far apart...ill post some pics this weekend

We have never had an auto solo in town that im aware of, so i was thinking this could be a fun saterday community event for a bunch of car guys..and we could make the track fairly large due to all the space.... This lot used to hold upwards of 500 plus cars not to mention its service and repair shop....that housed upwards of 50 cars at anyone time at its peek

But i have no clue as to how to organise something like that,...ive just been kicking the proverbial can around thinking about it
To be honest i cant even imagine the converstion with the bank that owns the vacant car lot...yeah i want to set up a community race event in which amatures will be racing around cones all saterday...and we would like to barrow the property pretty much for free....hahahaha

Yeah that will be a fun converstation

So anyway....anybody have experiances. Or hands on insight....im thinking maybe 100 cars would show up...from the local area....granted id be the only british iron im sure

But the task just seems daunting the more i think about it.

Is there a business that can do all this??? I know David lieb has experiance with this kind of thing as does trevor jesse...so ill bother them for some general insight as well.

Thanks guys

Good luck Prop
You'll probably need to start with the property owner, and an Insurance co. If you can get both on board, the city would be next.

Thanks phil.

I was.thinking something like the lake ozark midget 50....i hadnt thought.about city approval...wow this.could get really involved fast,

i wonder if id be wasteing my time to call the.scca, considering there really just a political lobbying organisation anymore, and dont really do much for sports cars like they did in there hay day 30 years ago

F*ck city/goverment/Nato aproval, go underground!!!
Illegal gymkhana's are the best!

Do it Prop and outrun the sherrif in your midget!
The "Black hole bandit". :)

Hmmm

Maybe thats an idea worth persuing, if i.did set up a gymkana then i could also.set up an organization that would set up sports car events for shows and racing.along with safty and performance driving .... Even have an on line tech session for modifying spports cars....i bet something like that would be vary.cool for the.local car guys...

I could use the auto solo to kick off the organization....heck i.could even set it iup as a non profit status

Hmmm, you know.... I wonder if the SCCA, wouldnt just turn that whole part of there organization over to me and my new organization, i cant see why not, its just dead wieght to them, and they havent done anything like that in years.... There soley about washinton dc these days

Im starting to like this idea the more i think about it
Prop

Lol... Thats an option arie

The car has to.run before i.can out run the sherrif and his radio...lol

You should come over and set up that part of the new organisations devision, sounds like you got lots experiance
Prop

Prop,

Shouldn't your car be running first????

See if you can find a car club that is insured for such things. Our local SCCA club does 7-9 autocross events each year here in Louisville.
Trevor Jessie

St Louis is probably your best bet:

Sadly he has misunderstood why we make these kind of events legal. It has very little to do with government and the sherrif. It is to do with personal liability!!

In this day and age there is a saying

Where there is blame there is a claim

If someone organises an event and some one or something is damaged then the organiser pays!! If you or anyone else wants to take that gamble then be prepared to be paying for the rest of your life.

Correctly organised events with the protection of club liability insurance protects organisers from such problems.

Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

Hey robert

Smokey and his old CB have to catch us 1st....hahah

Seriously .... Unlke some sheep intemate love-en member on this board, i agree illegal street racing should never be endorsed or promoted the out come wil eventually lead to a tragady and to be honest thats one of the reasons id like to persue setng up an auto solo event in my home town to promote the sport and show that it can and shold be done in a safe manner and be a benifite to the community, and not a negitive

But there will always be those renigade street racers that love sheep...they should be ashamed of themselfs....no doulbt it could lead to a wasted life time of triumph ownership if they dont find repentance.....lol

Prop, start with the SCCA Solo rule book.http://www.scca.com/documents/2011%20Tech/2011%20SCCA%20Solo%20Rules.pdf
That will describe what they consider a "safe" course site. Light poles are definitely a big hazard. You'll need a lot of rubber cones like those used by road repair crews etc. A first event can be timed with a stop watch, but the start and finish lines will have to be opposite each other so the same person can take an accurate time and you'll be limited to one car on the course at a time so keep the course short, under on minute average lap time to keep things rolling quickly. In addition to the cones you'll need some heavy duty chalk or pieces of drywall work pretty well to mark the lines around the cones on the asphalt or concrete.
Generally the event is split into two or more sections of cars with the drivers in one section working as course workers while the other section is driving and all drivers must work the course in their off sessions to make the work even.
You'll also need some flags, around 2' by 3' on a wooden shaft in red for the course workers to signal a DNF or accident with so that the course is closed quickly. You'll also need several fire extinguishers to spread among the course workers in the event any car catches fire during the event. This sort of safety equipment is absoutely essential.
All drivers will need an approved helmet of at least current Snell or SFI motorcycle standards and all cars have to have seat belts installed and in use.
You'll find more information on such activities at http://crownautocross.org/ My Midget is the thrid car on the front row in the photo taken at an event at Kansas Speedway last year.
That should get you started. If I can help with other details give me a shout.
