MG Midget and Sprite General - Historic car racing at Bathurst
A "Historic" car race at Bathurst with a good mix of old cars. I'm not a Ford fan but it's good viewing. With a 351ci engine the Falcon manages to mow most of them down. A couple of the Minis appear to be pretty quick. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toLPTjE1GZk&feature=player_embedded |

| Yes please, my turn my turn! Surprisingly short race though compared to UK race lengths, never mind the hour long races we got round the Nordschliefe. Still, it's on the list to do. A. |

The race track only exists for 1 week a year because the rest of the time it's a public road so I think the support races are kept short so all the other classes get a go. |

| Greg I suspect that video to be bulls..t You wouldn't get that mix of cars racing together and the wipers on that XY must be glued to the screen , they don't move at all in the wind. A lot different to what happens in a real XY Willy |

| having driven the circuit (not raced) it looks genuine to me, I think I saw a glimpse of Dennis Best's Lenham too. |

| Well spotted David, that is Denis' Lenham. This would have been taken at the annual FoSC meeting. http://www.fosc.com.au/ Usually an excellent meeting with plenty of variety. John Shep. |

| I loved that. I also spotted the Lenham. "Our" driver must have made a right mess of qualifying to start so far back as he was obviously quicker than anything else out there, or was it a handicap race? Having watched racing from Bathurst on TV for many years, I've often wondered what it looked like doing the full lap from inside the car. I also think it's genuine because you do get the same sort of mix of cars at the Goodwood revival meeting. Anyway, I thought the soundtrack of that 351ci Falcon was better than any arty farty music they sometimes put on racing footage. Bernie. |

| Crumbs!! That was fantastic- did anyon else get a bit queezy at those downhil chicanes???, I would have needed a change of underwear had I been screaming down those hills at those speeds :D Fantastic driving though!! Anyone know what the camera car was?? and what position it finished??, There seemed to be two cars in front of him at the chequered flag but they could have been back markers that had been lapped??? | Top stuff. Don't know why I never did any of that. Too late now though. |

| Video is genuine, been there done that, FOSC meetings in 2008 & 2009 in Budgie, 1960 998 Bugeye. Ran a 3.9 diff, bit of a struggle up the hill(it just keeps getting steeper and steeper, and when you think it can't get any steeper you round a bend and it does.)but great going down the twisty bits and Conrod Straight at 120mph passing a Lotus 11 LeMans was fantastic. I have videos on youtube under cuffybert51 if you want to have a look. FOSC had a 5 year deal with Bathurst City Council who control the track but they pulled the pin on it when another organisation came along with more money. Great shame really. I'm pleased to have raced at Bathurst as the opportunities for amateurs to race there are few and far between. |

| Attached is a pic of two ex Bathurst cars, the Ford Falcon GTHO (same type as one in video) and the other is a Holden (General Motors) Torana GTR XU-1. The big car manufacturers in Australia were Holden and Ford and so there was strong rivalry between the two. Both had factory backed teams. The Falcon had more power than the Torana which only had a 202ci 6cyl engine but it was a lot more nimble. These cars raced in the early 70’s Look like the Falcon didn’t qualify which is why he’s started at the back of the pack. Obviously makes you look a lot quicker when you’re at the back with the slower cars and an engine twice the size of everyone else helps too. I think the two cars up front at the finish where GTR’s so probably 3rd place at the end.

| Lawrence.... it's never ever too late to start. A good friend of mine started when he was over 50, it can be done. Andrew |

| I'm led to believe the GT HO Falcon change hands for BIG $$$$s if you can find one.... Mark. |
| M T Boldry |
| Found one for you... But for me to consider paying $395k (258k GBP) it would at least need to have a roadworthy and rego so I'll let this one go. Ridiculous considering a standard 6cyl one would only go for $5k or $10k.

| Hi Andrew, Unlike in my younger excess of testosterone fuelled years, --- I'm now lacking in enthusiam, motivation, endurance, flexibility, fast reflexes, money, and perhaps the killer lack of, which relegates all of the above excuses to the back of the queue, ---- bottle lol. |

| Greg Ok it's sounding like it's a genuine clip and after replaying it I did see the wiper arm move (once) coming into the chase on the second lap. It's just that every XY I've been in have been very busy cars at speed. I guess it doesn't show up in that video as much Apologies for doubting Willy |
