MG Midget and Sprite General - Forgotten Sprite Mk2

Hi everyone on this great site, was reading davids near purchase of the 1961 midget, got me thinking about the sprite Mk2 i bought in 1989,i seen an ad in the newspaper for a midget and went over to sandymount in dublin and found a fairly rough mk2 sprite in the front of an arthur daly type car dealer,it was 1961 or 2 cant remember, registered new in dublin, but it was totally complete with original upholstery dash, engine, old brown log book, half boot lid handle, all there,i think it may have done some hill climbs or some kind of racing, towed it to a friends garage with my ex post and telegraphs renault 4 van! he still does resto work for me,(hes very good and a mk2 jag owner) stripped out every thing and replaced the bad floors. sills, a posts most work done really,i was 23 at the time and was always short of money(beer was my first priority then)he had it in his garage till 1992 when he rang me and asked would i be interested in a swop for a lancia fulvia of all things, that he had taken in as a trade,i said yes and drove the lancia for a year when i sold it to pay for double glazing on my new (old) house, not beer this time!some guy came to his garage that he didnt know about a year or so later and bought it from him, sorry for boring you with this story, but i phoned him today and he couldnt remember who bought it,it was almost twenty years ago,i cant remember last week sometimes, but he has some info and photos of the car at home,so my mission now is to try find out what happened to the car,id love to buy it back again as it was a very early model, ill post if i get any newsor photos. thanks. Martin,
Is their an online site for Irish cars where you can check to see if it is still registered and in use, as one can in the UK? That is assuring you can remember the reg no.
Guy

hi there guy,not as im aware of,i cant remember the reg,but my mate says he has photos with it,i know some coppers and thats one way of finding out here! if its been registered with a new owner of course, the classic car world is a much smaller community here than the UK,so i would be reasonably confident of finding it or what became of it,less of buying it back! Love a good car mystery! Martin

Guy, which site can one check to see if a car is still alive?

I would love to know about a Ford Consul capri 1962 I used to own.

Cheers

Lawrence,
Its the DirectGov Vehicle Enquirey site. If you know the reg no. you can in most cases get an answer which will show if it is currently taxed or SORNd. If neither shows up, then it has most probably been scrapped

Hi Martin,

If you'd like to email that image to me (when you get it) to "editor at midget and sprite club dot co dot ukay" I will put a request into "Where are they now" section the magazine.
Only last month we managed to track down an ex Guernsey registered Mk1 Sprite and now the ex owner and current owner are in direct contact.

Thanks Guy, I'd forgotten about the SORN site.

I tried and it doesn't show, so as you say either scrapped or sitting unused somewhere.

It probably became spares in another Capri most likely.

thats great gary, soon as i have something, ill send it on. Thanks. Martin

Lawrence,
if the car has changed registration number then it also wont show

do as Gary has suggested to Martin, contact the Consul Capri clubs and ask where is it now
