MG Midget and Sprite General - Engine, box and everything
Hello all, I have decided to switch to K-series power. That means that I do not required my 1275 engine, gearbox and all the ancils (Twin SU Carbs etc etc). I also won't need the rear prop and I will be chaging brakes etc. The car has done 3500 miles since a full re-build (Inc engine) and was featured in Practical Classics. My question is - what could I expect to sell the engine, box (Full set-up) for? I know this is a possible 'piece-of-string' question but a few of you may know the market better than me!!

piece of string question. Just consider this: The buyer can not asses the internals and standard of work. resto pics (certainly engine rebuild) or bills regulary get split up by traders to make an other car look better. That is why I will never buy a engine other that for a rebuild from a private individual. I am not saying that your engine is anything other that what you are saying but it is imposible to asses for a buyer. There for a buyer will alway offer way less than it would cost

Onno, Fair comments. The engine could be heard/compression tested/driven prior to removal and I can show receipts for parts etc but without taking the thing to bits... I guess it will just have to go on ebay in parts since that will make more money - it just seems a shame to split up a good/fairly fresh rebuild.

Looks like this!

JF, I think you will get the most for it if you can leave the car unmolested so that someone can drive or ride in it to see how it feels and performs. Then remove it after you have the agreement to buy, and maybe 50% down before removal. Charley

Wouldn't it be more profitable to split the lot up? For example selling the carbs, engine, gearbox, propshaft seperately?
BH Harvey
JF, if you have room keep the engine and box somewhere safe (after covering everything in oil), turn it over with oil down the bores every few months and sit back knowing you have an inflation busting savings 'account'!! The other benefit is that you will have a decent engine to put back in when the K series blows it's head gasket!

Hi JF, I'm interested in the engine/box/shaft etc if you decide to go down that route as a job lot. If you want to make contact e-mail me, peter dot hobson at talktalk dot net. Peter

C Huff - you are right! B Harvey - you are right too! John P - I had considered that option. Unfortunately, I already have a 'spare' VVC engine in case of HGF and I think I may become addicted to the K....! Peter - I may well drop you an email.

JF, you're probably right. I drove a K engined car at the weekend and the first thing I said after getting out of it was 'give me the number for Frontline!'.
