MG Midget and Sprite General - Engine Number

Hello all,

Hope you are all well.

Not sure if this should be a general or a technical, either way its one for the boffins that love their production records and numbering systems! :-)

Can anyone tell me anything about my engine? The engine number is DM3657ESS so isn't original. Can anyone shed some light on where or what it came from?

Just curious about it as it isn't original (and perhaps there is some faint deluded hope it might be some magic prototype engine with 500 hp!) ;-)

Cheers,
Malcolm

I assume this is a Midget 1500 with the Triumph engine. According to this web page http://club.triumph.org.uk/prefix1.htm#Quick an engine with prefix DM is from a Triumph Toledo, 1500 or Dolomite 1500.
Mike Howlett

Yeah, I meant to mention I had found that, were there any differences in the engines?

I might be asking the wrong people (no offence to you all!) I should befriend some of those mad Triumph folk! ;-)

Maybe I'm better off not knowing where it came from... ha ha

Malcolm,
ask on the Triumph sites not all car owners treat their marques like religions (some do though)

this (American site) shows it as a recon 1500 engine (ESS) - http://www.triumphspitfire.com/enginenumbers.html

also you could save time if you altered your title to include your first name and car profile (Customise button at top of page

Ahhhh! thats how you do it! I had never been able to figure out how to turn vehicle profile on and how to change my name from an annonumous M. Thanks Nigel.

Bit of an old picture, thats when it still used to look like a car.

I think Deb the 1500 oracle has answered my question by proxy... its just a boggo 1500, they were all the same.

Thanks for listening to me thinking out loud and putting up with my rather irrelevant questions! Its a slooooow, dull day at work and I had to do something to stave off insanity!

Malcolm your cars being kidnapped !

Well done some seem unable to master this changing details lark (or don't want to be told)

next it's mastering the Archive for you

glad you got the answer and it's been reconned so will only need servicing :)

Reconned when... hmmm... you will be glad to know I have my owners manual already for when the car is back in a serviceable state! :-)

>>Reconned when... hmmm...<<

I'm afraid I'd guess if it has the ESS bit then it was possibly many, many, years ago - unless it got reconned again since

the reprint of the factory Parts Catalogue would also be very useful to you even now or during rebuild

or that DVD
