MG Midget and Sprite General - dongle internet ?

Can I use a internet dongle directly into a internet TV?

Also if I could then I would want to use things like I player to save recording programs I may miss and instead watch them on demand. However what sort of download limit would I reuire to use this kind of facility?

with Dongles you pay by the amount of download -- would get very expensive doing it that way -- not sure if an internet tv will support one, but i doubt it as you need to install the diler program for your chosen provider!
Mick struggling with the wiring

if its anything like mine, no.

You need to connect it to your router (assuming you have one and not using mobile internet). You can do this with a long cable (for a fiver) or using a wireless adapter. To scam you out of even more money tvs only work with their proprietry wireless dongle i.e. my sony tv needs a sony wireless dongle at £80!! not just any old wireless dongle.

Hi Rob,

As previously stated, no. The best thing is to wire the TV directly into the router as Malcolm suggested, or I use a pair of Powerline adapters, one is plugged in to the mains socket by my router, and the other is plugged in to a socket by the TV. Works brilliantly, and is also significantly cheaper (£36 ish for a pair of adapaters on Amazon) than buying the specific WiFi adapter for your television. I think Samsung wanted £55 for the wireless dongle for the TV that I bought.

If you go down the powerline route make sure that you go for the 200MB/s parts, not the cheaper 85MB/s since these are really obsolete.

Also using Powerline adapters if you change you TV in a few years time you won't be left having to buy another dongle for the new television. You just plug the new tv straight in to your existing powerline adapters!

Cheers,

The answer to the question is ...I think he plays for Marseilles.
M Blencowe

Just to clarify a little

The reason for the question is that because I live in a village internet speed is only around 1/2 a meg. Thus using catch up on the internet is a tad dodgy. I can get a faster speed by using an internet dongle but I wondered if that could be used straight into the TV an also ould the download limit be a costly problem and I think that is what Mick has suggested.

Thanks so far.

'internet dongle' is a bit of a loose phrase Bob, do you perhaps mean a 3G wireless dongle?
David Smith

I sell this sort of stuff and 'airtime', and it's a very expensive way to go.

Your broadband speed is slow but why? One of my rural customers, 8kms from the exchange now gets a little over 2Mb compared with a few hundred k before hand.

So it can be done.

I Ball

David I assumed the mobile internet dongles were from a variety of suppliers including as example vodaphone, orange etc.?

Ian yes I think it is expensive I was kind off hoping someone would tell me I was wrong but you and others have convinced me.

In fairness I have just done a test and my speed is about 1.6 meg and 1/2 meg uploading that is with talk talk so I blame the distance from the exchange, would you agree?
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

1 MB = 6 minutes, on a good day.

If there are any phone extensions in the house take of the face plates and make sure that terminal three is not connected. You only need terminals 2 and 5 connected.

Any others that are connected could reduce your speed by about 1 Meg.

Our lines varies from 2 to 3.5 meg as we live in the country. At much less than 3 Meg Iplayer is getting less than 100%.

A dongle needs a computer to install on before it will work. It will not find that on your TV so will not work.
