MG Midget and Sprite General - Don Trimming Company

Has anyone here used these for a hood or tonneau? If so I would be interested to know what you thought of the quality of their products and what their service was like.

If it's the oufit in Erdington then with my previous Spridget I had one of their vynil hoods fitted by them at their factory and it was an excellent job (but that was 15+ years ago)

not many months after fitting I had the hood frame break (just my luck) and with the new hood frame the hood was a far too tight looking fit

Trev,

I purchased a double-duck hood with zip out rear screen for our Midget from Don's about ten years ago through our local parts vendor. Very good quality, no problems, and would recommend them.

Regards,

Larry C '69 Midget

my personal opinion now so no offence to Larry

Vinyl is much more servicable, easier to keep clean, presentable and waterproof especialy on a car like mine, a daily that's not ever garaged or covered

I had a new mohair hood made and fitted by them last September. It's fantastic quality, looks great and does what it says on the tin. They couldn't have been more helpful from start to finish and also adapted the half-tonneau that the PO had chopped up to accommodate the roll bar and had made a pigs ear of. Highly recommended.
Jue Williams

They've been making hoods for a very long time.

I have one of their hoods on my B, although I bought it from an MG parts supplier in 1986. Very well made.

Dave,
do you know for certain
if the normal (service item) plastic vented oil filler cap fits an alloy rocker cover on a B please?
Nigel Atkins

same as other thread - it will depend on how the manufacturer designed the rocker cover, whether he copied an existing factory filler design or invented his own. What problem are you having, specifically? A pic might help.
David Smith

Interesting! All seems positive feedback which is exactly the opposite to my experience having just bought a tonneau from them. I'll say no more until I have spoken to the boss next week.

clever Trevor, clever

oh I should add - I did find the management very wooly, family concern?

I had to wait so long (a very, very long time) to pay in the office that I thought of walking out and posting a cheque, not that I need pay as they didn't have my full name and address

when the manager finally came in he had the honesty, and perhaps with some people the stupidity to say he'd forgotten I was waiting for him

all this was 15+ years ago
Nigel Atkins

Did the tonneau have the headrest pockets too far forward?

I've had a double-duck hood from Don H some 20 years ago - excellent quality and just recently used hood reviver on it...still going strong. Also just bought a standard vinyl one from them recently - very good also. The only down side of double duck is getting bird doo off it and the inevitable fading... cheers - Neal

No problems with the hood and half tonneau I had from them about 9 years ago. None of this is of any use to you of course - perhaps you have just been unlucky. I'm sure if it is wrong they will fix it.
Geoff Mears

Problems sorted. The guy I spoke to obviously contacted the boss and he rang me himself later this morning. I must say he was prepared to go out of his way to put things right, so I am now happy and it has restored my faith in good old fashioned customer service and now I would be happy to recommend them.

I'm very pleased to hear that you've got it sorted out so swiftly - my personal experience of Mark (the owner), is that he really does value his customers and will bend over backwards to make sure the service he provides is second to none.
Jue Williams

Good that you mention the good example of customer service.
Every company can make mistakes it is how they deal with them that is the imporant bit!

We get plenty of screamers over here that start shouting before there is a problem.
Onno Könemann

Jue - It was Mark that phoned me and he certainly bent over backwards to please me.

Onno - Agree mistakes do happen and how they are dealt with makes all the difference. The guy I spoke to originally didn't help matters, but I think its a small workforce and he is probably just a worker there and when the boss phoned it was soon sorted.

I was going to put earlier that perhaps Jue let Mark know because of this thread but then I thought Jue might get upset at this and storm off

so I didn't :)
Nigel Atkins

And why would you imagine I might storm off Nigel? Hmmm strange, sorry don't quite understand that.

In answer to your comment, no I haven't spoken to Mark. I only know him from fitting my hood last year, so it would be a tad odd for a complete stranger to phone him about a problem that someone else has.

I was trying to help out a fellow owner. Perhaps I misunderstood the point of the forum.
Jue Williams

this must be the first time I've upset you then !

I thought you were the Jue I managed to upset when I first joined here who went off in a huff perhaps not seeing mine (and others) explanation

Yes I agree the point is to help and if you had known Mark well enough to talk to I think that would have been good too

I hoped the >>so I did't<< and smilie would suggest good humour if you were the other person
