MG Midget and Sprite General - Deviant on eBay. Remember these?

Here's a blast from the past. I've never seen one in the flesh (or fibreglass). Ebay item number 200694056746.

I've seen photos that a friend had one years ago but he built up himself I think, not sure if it was a 1500 but I never thought to ask

that colour would look good on a Spridget but to my mind doesn't suit that particular car especially with thoses wheels

*IT HAS THE ORIGINAL AVON TURBOSPEED TYRES WHICH HAVE NO SIGNS OF CRACKS OR PERISHING*

That'll be all right then, less than 30 years old.

Perhaps I just do not understand. But ... why on
earth would you want to take a perfectly beautiful
MG Midget and make it look like that???
chuckc

Chuck, a lot of people would not agree that a 1500 can be 'perfectly beautiful'
David Smith

At the end of the 70s and early 80s there was certainly a few efforts to make kit cars to look like the earlier T Type Midgets.

The Dragonfly was the attempt to convert 1500 Midgets into look alike T Types, (This in my opinion must be one of the worst looking kit cars ever.)

Also on the market around the same time was the NG kit which converted Marinas, MGBs and Fords into T Type midget look alikes. In fairness the NG kit cars did look like the real thing, nearly bought one myself. :)
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

Not for the first time I find myself in complete disagreement with Bob! As these kit cars go I rather like it...I'm no lover of kit cars, but if you think Marlin Roadster rather than T Type you'll see where I'm coming from. Perhaps.

Believe me, I've seen a LOT uglier cars in production. This may benefit from having 1275 running gear to drop it down, but all in all I'd call it one of the better ones.

Whether you like the look or not, its pretty amazing for a 27 year old car to have only 22 miles since it was built! Of course they avoid mentioning the mileage on the vehicle beneath the plastic!
Guy

Chuck,
I'd have thought rust and crash damage might have led to some builds

Bob,
I thought about buying a NG TC(? the V8 one) and at a MG show at Duxford I thought I'd just look at their stand but as I went by it in my Westie to park up and walk back to it the guy on the stand made some sneering remark about my car that I didn't bother

Did the Dragonflys also use 1275 running gear?
Nigel Atkins

I've saved it for a future article in the magazine.
Gary & Gaps

I quite like the look of it, but not the colour.

Presumably it was built on a 'used' Midget, so it isn't actually a new car. I'm not sure that they ever actually chopped up new Midgets to build them.

IIRC, the front chassis rails were extended to increase the wheelbase. Not sure what that does for the handling.

Also, it doesn't look to have been stored too carefully...and how easy would it be to register this 'new' car?

If the running boards/wheel arches were lowered about a foot, some nicer wheels installed, and something nicer done with the rear (rear lights and mounted spare wheel look wrong to me) then I might quite like it. From the front I think it looks pretty alright, but the wheel to guard clearance is ridiculously huge - it kinda goes with the 4x4 style steel wheels.
Andrew F

It might look better with some 18, or 19" wire wheels, to try and fill in those fender gaps.

Well, it made £7068

Another Dragonfly for sale, albeit in the US, but with 1275cc, RHD on British plates. Being sold by Jamie Pratt - maybe a relative of Daniel Pratt the original designer/builder? Check out:
http://www.dupontregistry.com/autos/search/DRauSearchDetails.aspx?itemid=1079443

His asking price is $31,594, so £7K may be a bargain!

I was semi-interested until it reached £4.5K, but considering its not registered there could be issues with the DVLA, plus I would definately want change those tyres.

Interstingly, I found the following link:

http://www.thewaywewere.me.uk/page48aaaa.html

I think it looks best in red with chrome wires.

Interestingly, the one in the States is the same one as thewaywewere site...and claims that there are only 3 in the world! It was exported in 2007, according to DVLA.
