MG Midget and Sprite General - Complete Front Panel Needed!

Hello,

Finally got the bumper off the front of my 1980 Midget and taken the wings off

Need a complete front panel (the bit that goes in front of radiator and in between wings) Not sure of the correct/technical name just know what we got is shot!

Anyone know where I can get one? Have found loads on net for pre 1980 midget but can't seem to find one for rubber bumper model.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Claire

So you got the bumper off? What was the problem then? That thread rather degenerated into irrelevant rubbish so I am not surprised you didn't reply with the outcome to your problem!

Front Panel ( and its as good a name as any _) for the 1500s is different from the earlier ones for the valance (behind number plate mounting) and for the shape of the ducting that feeds air to the radiator and to the heater. At a pinch you could use an earlier one and modify it but you would be better off waiting until the correct one turns up.

If you've got the cash, Moss do that unit complete for £225, but that is as much as the whole car cost so I don't suppose that would interest you!

But they are offering 12% discount if you order before 5 Sept.

The bumper was as we thought just held on with 30 years of crud, tar and a few rounded off bolts - ended up taking angle grinder/drill/hammer to it! Turns out there was no knack just good old brute force and ignorance LOL

Good to know we could use an older one as these seem to be more readily available and cheaper.

Am I right in thinking this bit doesn't really do anything structurally speaking?

If anyone does have a second hand one laying around let me know (cheeky I know but worth a try!)

Are you keeping the front bumper ???

If not it might be better to get a complete front clip....as im not sure about the turn signals location

Hopefully arie will stop by soon... His is debumpered and it looks really good.... Unforantly... All i can offer is a whole lota blah blah and not much real help.... I just tgink the turn signals might be an issue.... Im just not sure

Good luck and keep us posted

Claire. The panel Andy refers to is the correct one for your car (GAN6) part number CZJ565. Ealier ones had the hole for the heater trunking on the other side.

Prop. The turn signals are not a problem as they are in the wings, not the front panel.

Sorry Prop. That should read, can be fitted in the front wings, not they are in the front wings.

Sorry Prop. That should read "can be fitted in the front wings", not "they are in the front wings". I had my 1275 head on.

Hello,

Thanks for all your help guys - guess we have a few tense days until the auction ends not keen on paying £225 would settle for second hand used if in good condition. We are definately keeping as rubber bumper (think switching to chrome may be a bit advanced for our first resto plus the rubber bumpers are in excellent condition).

Does anyone know if this front assembly includes the tray at the bottom? I now know the valance bit at the very bottom (behind the number plate) is sold seperately but these are quite readily available and quite cheap.

Thanks again for the help

The full assembly should be just that - everything. Whilst the valance is available separately its only because it can rust and can be replaced. The BMH assembly I bought (2nd hand for a 1275) a few years back was certainly complete.

I have a good secondhand one for a 1275 (chrome). bit of rust but easily treated and basically sound if you would like to make an offer. I am in north Lincs.

The full assembly should be as in the moss diagram attached. It consists of a number of pressings welded together as in the illustration, item numbered 25. This is what the e-bay offered unit CZJ565 that Bernie has pointed out for you.

If you don't already have one, you should get a copy of the Moss parts catalogue for your car. It is full of diagrams and shows all the parts and how they relate to each other. Even if you are not buying from Moss, it provides a useful resource for assembly diagrams.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the offer but can you send me a pic or post one on here? and how much is a bit of rust (only ask because thats what the guy who we bought the car off said! LOL)

How much adapting is required to fit a 1275 to my 1500?

Claire

Rust is:

Rubbing down treating and painting.

Rot is cut out tinworm, weld in new metal and paint.

Mine is a little rust :))

Will send you some piccies

I think the ifference is that the 1500 has a couple of cut outs in the front valance.

Claire,

The 4" hole for the air intake for the heater is also on the opposite side on the early cars. That is what I meant before when I said an earlier one would need adapting. You would need to cut out a new hole and fabricate a flange to it, and close of the one on the other side. All quite easy basic fabrication work.

Hi Guy - sounds easy then - didn't want to have to be cutting bits off to make it fit in the gap.

Bob - send me the pics and let me know what price you have in mind for it.
