MG Midget and Sprite General - clutch has gone

just took midget out and my clutch made a sratching scraping noise then wouldnt go in to gear just a bout got it home in in 1st gear i know it is not the slave as that was done last year
what i want to know is can i change the clutch with out taking the engine out my book says the gearbox cant be removed with out takein the engine out

Sadly for you, it's an engine out job.

I always find it easier to pull the engine and box together. You can do this single handed with some difficulty and an engine hoist. Removing the bonnet single handed is awkward.

Sorry, engine has to come out as no provisions were made under the car to just drop the transmission. You can remove just the engine but it's just as easy to take out the transmission at the same time. It might make refitting everything easier too. Don't forget to drain the transmission and put a good heavy plastic bag over the tailpiece so you don't lose any fluids when you raise it up. Of course, this probably depends if your driveshaft fits into the housing or there's a yoke there, either way, it prevents a potential mess.

Yes, it's engine out and as Daniel says, often easier to take box out with it... (drain the gearbox oil first).

If there's two of you that have half a clue about what you are doing, it'll take you less than a day to complete the whole job, so Midget 50 is NOT in jepourdy....

Not sure if there is anyone close to you... Maybe Andrew McGee...?

Nick Cooper may also be close if he has the time...

Good luck and don't forget to fill the gearbox up with fresh oil before you drive off in it again... :-)
