MG Midget and Sprite General - Clutch almost siezed!!!

Hi all

2010 and 2011 have been bad years for me due to two accidents at work and then the cartilage in my kn going bad so the work on my Midget has been very near zero!!

About three weeks ago she wouldn't fire at all, run out of petrol!!!

I put a gallon in and it took ages to draw through but eventually she coughed and spluttered in to life, after around ten minutes with the choke nob fully home she was purring and blipping beautifully but when I depressed the clustch and went for first gear, it was solid :(

After another five minutes of getting warmth into the engine and much pumping she slid in perfectly :)

Now my garage roof leaks slightly so I have a square plastic box sitting on the hardtop to catch the drip and i'd guess that it was about a third full, i'd forgotten about it when I let up the clutch and drove forwards with a bit of gusto!!!

Top and bottom was that it slid off the roof and emptied the contents into a sportsbag behind the car that was holding my circular saw, two drills and loads of other electric tools!!

I think next time I will have to exercise more care!!!

Cheers, John :))

nightmare but still signing off with a smile, that's good to see !

John,

Don't write the tools off, I've read that you can often save electrical and electronic items that have gotten wet by rinsing the effected parts in distilled or de-ionised water and then allowing them to dry gently in something like an airing cupboard, don't force dry. I've not had to do this with any of my stuff but have revived a couple of electronic items for a mate this way.

Thanks lads

I put them in the dining room up against the radiators for nearly a week, I plugged them in today and everything works fine!!

I have a massive 110v Bosch belt sander that was completely submerged under floodwater around three years ago (at work), our foreman was throwing it in the skip so I cadged it from him and put it in our spare room with the heating on(after blowing it out with an oxy propane cutter!!), a few days later it was fine!!, I start it up now and then thinking that the bearings will be siezed or at least very noisy, it's always as sweet as a nut!!!!

Cheers, John :))

the main worry with the water saturation if they dry out and work is rust on parts that er rust

I've got a cordless phone that must be at least 12 years old twice I've at least once left outside overnight in the heavy rain, you could hear the water inside I just allowed it to dry out naturally and then put it on the charger, I'm sure I heard a short fizzle noise, it fully charged and was fine, I've also dropped it a couple of times - I don't think the new lighter construction ones would last so long but they're so much cheaper in real terms now

Wet electronics can be dried in a hot air oven. Kids left a nintendo ds outside in the rain, took of the battery and opened all that could be easily removed, put it in the oven at 80 degrees (or was it 60), works like a charm.

Alex,

The purpose of the de-ionised or distilled water rinse I mentioned was in the case of water which may have dissolved chemicals in it which when dried would leave conductive residues that would screw up many modern electronic items due to the small currents in use. That can cover rain, river, pond water etc. One item I helped revive for a mate was his step dads Fluke DVM which had been left in a garage and had gotten rain water in it from a leaking roof, it didn't work properly when dried initially but a few careful rinses of the circuit board and subsequent drying seem to have left it fully functional. The recommendations I've seen recommend the rinse while still wet from the initial contamination though to dilute and remove contamination.
