MG Midget and Sprite General - Carpet, one more time

I searched the archives, but...I'd like some opinions/ help choosing new carpet. With prices of $300.00 and up for quality sets, I'm tempted to see a local shop. I could bring him my old set for a pattern, the tunnel is the only piece that needs sewing. But what material, loop v pile should I be looking for? I'd like comthing fairly durable and stain resistent on the tunnel at least

Alternativly, If anyone knows where a decent set can be had reasonbly?

I never understood why they put carpet there anyway.

It isnt as if you walk on it is it?

When I needed to rethink the tunnel covering after installing the 5 speed gearbox I decided to treat the area as another side wall like the outer edges of the car.

So I made up a cover with heavy duty vinyl and some of the padding normally placed under laminate flooring as a sound deadener. The stuff I used had a metallic layer on one side and has helped reduce noise and heat ingress into the car.

The normal carpet should be easy enough to find at your local auto trim shop, cheap and cheerful ought to do it.

to ADD On to phils thread... Im seriously thinking of loosing some of the side panals in the foot wells in lou of carpet

I had my carpet custom installed from a large sheet of carpet that was cut and glued into place, so Ive got plenty of carpet leftthat I can fill in th voids

do you think my idea is a good or bad... I just think the carpet would look better then the panals

Prop,

Seem to remember - think it was the MGOC 'club' carpet set was carpet sides to the footwell mounted on hardboard.
Also the door panels had carpet on the lower portion as well.
Not sure if they still do them.
They were on my Midget project car when I bought it some years ago - now all binned so can't check.
