MG Midget and Sprite General - Car trailer Hire near York? (NMC)
Hi All I'm struggling to find a trailer hire place that will hire a trailer on a Saturday (to potentially collect the next project) Has anyone got any ideas/ previous experience or even *cheekily* one I could borrow for a day for some beer/whisky tokens. My dad would be doing the towing ans I'm on the new 'you can't do anything' licence thanks for the help Rob

Where's the next project Rob? Can't help you with anyone around York, but, am collecting a few things for my next project, so, if I can help out, I will do! Rach (hates whiskey and beer, so you'll have to be more imaginative in future if she helps!)

It's in Derby, but is another eBay special, so don't know if I even need a trailer yet :)
Rob Armstrong
When would you need it? I know of one that I think you could borrow (it won't win any awards, but it does the job..) but the owner won't be in the UK for much longer.
OrangeSpyderMan
cheers OSM, that may well be very useful would either be this sat or the next sat, *if* i win. my email is ra506 AT york DOT ac DOT uk :)
Rob Armstrong
did you win it?
OrangeSpyderMan
| I bought a different one that had an MOT, so I don't need the trailer! thanks a lot for the offer though! It's very brown...
|
Rob Armstrong
Hard to tell from the photo, but it looks more like 'tobacco leaf' than 'Mexico brown'. Auto, I assume, as no 'S' on grille badge?

nice, series 1 6 years ago I had a Series 2 3500S I was forever explaining that the doors close under their own weight and didn't need slamming

*drools* One of those is on my wish list. SWMBO quite likes them too.... Is that a caravan club grille badge? :)
OrangeSpyderMan
Are you breaking it Rob?
rachmacb
Gnnaaaa breaking it? no no no :p it's too good to break! though I have taken the caravan club badge off :) it is a tobacco leaf series 1 3500 auto, MOT till december, total restoration including new sills, wings, rear suspension and £3000 engine work in 1999, after which it's done 16K miles. 1 previous owner (the 'dealer' chap I bought it from wasn't on the v5) It's sooooo quiet and a lot of thirsty (though the fuel gauge doesn't work) but a perfect compliment to the mad midget. and the land rover... was valued in june 2010 at £5000, I paid less than a fifth of that. currently it only runs if you hold the ignition key over, but that's going to be easily sorted.
Rob Armstrong
LOL that's a shame - I'd have made you a good offer for a couple of parts I'm needing for a "decent" car :P! Good luck with it, sounds like you got a great bargain :)
rachmacb
try or use the 'reserve' fuel tap regularly to prevent it seizing up they do like and reward clean air filters and regular oil and filter changes inboard rear brakes often get missed lovely ride especially in the back seats the miles just waft by they can be reasonably econonical (for a V8) on a run but can be gunned very nicely (if full and proper serving, ect) :)
Nigel At
already started the servicing, cleaned out the SUs and redone the battery connections. all disks were new 16K ago, the inboard ones look great, which is good 'cos they look like a proper nightmare... currently hunting for filter options, the front intake on the airbox looks mighty small for 3.5 litres of engine. will do oil change and check plugs as well. what sort of 'decent' car are you wanting bits for Rach? it also came with a stabiliser bar and extendo-mirrors if anyone wants some...
Rob Armstrong
LOL you'll see when I leave you standing ;)
rachmacb
Perhaps the small airbox aperture gives a ram effect, a mate has a 4 litre ex-TVR engine on a standard airbox in his P5 with no noticeable lack in performance A pair of K&Ns would give a nice noise though

Woo insurance paperwork has come through - 110 quid. Lovely, less than a tank of fuel...
Rob Armstrong
Wow Rob, its big! Your planning a family or a bankjob? :)
Arie de Best
That is style! Its one of the few designs that really stands the test of time. If one hadn't seen one before, it could almost be mistaken for a current model. They are also immensely strong. A friend of mine walked away from had a full head on 60mph smash ( 120mph impact speed) with a large Mercedes saloon (the Merc came out of a filling station on an empty road one morning, and forgetting he was no longer in Germany, set off down the wrong side of the road) My friend just had a broken arm; the Merc driver wasn't so lucky.
Guy
definitely a bankjob lol. it is enormous, 4.5m long... Guy that's nice to know, but I won't be crashing it just yet to test the theory! (hopefully!)

My Dad used to work on P6s at the Rover 'works' in Solihull, followed by SD1s before he retired.

Just had to order 2 tyres, the ones on the front were 27 years old (!) and starting to look funky round the inner bead...
Rob Armstrong
if the ones on the back are old I'd replace them too my tightfisted mate swapped his old tyres despite them still having plenty of thread and went on to to tell me at great length what a big difference this made - as if I hadn't told him this sevearl times over the years you want as much grip as you can get for those side winds - you'll find out about those :)
Nigel At
back ones were new a couple of years ago :) Monsters as well, 205 70 14. everyone keeps telling me about side winds....
Rob Armstrong
side winds are no where near as bad as most make out they will be but the first (and only time) I really noticed I was gunning along on an open dual-carraigeway and it did take me by surprise, as you said they are quite long but not very wide, you'd never get 4 burly coppers in them nowadays the Rover P6 was a revelation when it was released, more so as it followed the Auntie Rovers, and were a very safe car for its time it and the Citeron DS have featured in films set in the future confirming what Guy said about the design standing the test of time I've been clearing out electronic files and found my old file that I passed on to the next owner of my P6 and found (series 2, manual g/box) - Max. power 143 bhp @ 5,000 rpm Max. torque 202 lbs/ft @ 2,700 rpm 0 - 60 mph 9.7 seconds Top speed 125 mph so it could soon catch up with and pass most British sports cars of the day
