MG Midget and Sprite General - Can you recommend a car transport company

Hi

I wonder if any of you can recommend a company to move a rolling chassis and bits with the engine and gearbox out of the car. Cornwall to Bedfordshire!

Mark,
You could try this idea:
http://www.shiply.com/how-it-works.php

You post what you want moving and when, and wait for the quotes to come in. I have used it several times now and it is very cost effective. Not sure how you judge how caring of your pride and joy they may be but I have not had any problems. But you may prefer a specific personal recommendation.
Guy

Thanks Guy - lots of quotes rolling in.

Anyone who can make a personal recommendation for a company please do though...

Come on Mark, spill the beans, what have you bought now?

Matt you have mail!

Mark - I've used a couple of the Shiply ones and have found them both to be really good - so I would think that you're pretty safe with the best of the quotes. They have a feedback system a bit like ebay, so, the worst ones can be easily weeded out.

Mark,
There's a chap in my village, who I don't know but he operates this firm.
May be worth an enquiry if there is any advantage in being reasonably local to you.

Good luck!

Nice chap he is too Matt if he can fit in I may be using him!

I have been let down this morning by the Cornish chap I found yesterday.

Rach

Shiply is great and I had lots of replies. They all get scared when you explain the engine and gearbox are not in the car! Even when you said it up front! Hence my let down this morning.

Last vehicle I had moved was all in one piece, but the rear transmission was locked solid. As it weighed 1800Kgs and had VERY grippy tyres it wasn't exactly easy getting it loaded. But the bloke who turned up was very helpful and with a bit of ingenuity we got it winched on - and off again.

With an easy 2-man lift for your engine it shouldn't be that difficult to find, especially if there is someone available to help with loading. Or get a flat bed with a Hiab?

Guy, think I am sorted now thanks to Matt.

There will be noboday at the collection to help with the loading which has been the issue. If all goes to plan the car should be picked up on Monday. I have everything crossed.

Thanks for all the advice.

Bummer Mark - and weird - the first car I got moved by one of their people was hardly working - it came from Max!!!!!!!

Glad you're sorted now though - good luck with the purchase

As I understand it, the Shpley system doesn't employ carriers etc. It is just an on-line job auction. A sort of dating agency between people with stuff to move and those with the means of moving it! And Shiply take a small fee from both ends of the transaction so they can't loose. You post what you want moving and people interested will quote. Often for larger items they are quoting on what would otherwise be an empty return journey so you can get some really good deals.

And it isn't all haulage, anyone can offer to take something so if you are doing a long cross county trip you could end up getting your petrol paid for in exchange for carrying at small parcel. About a Kilo in weight!
Guy

Hmmmmm - wonder what I can charge for having married together Guy and his hood via me dad then ....?!?!?!?!!!!

Seriously, that does sound a good idea, although, when I tried it for just a gearbox, the only quotes I got were more than I'd paid for the cars I'd had moved - further!

Mark,
Pleased to hear that the happy couple are expecting a delivery shortly! I'll keep my eyes peeled for any stray engine and gearbox combos lying on the Oving Road!
I've no idea how good Mr SVM is but he's always got a car on his flatbed whenever I drive past in the morning, and seems to have the entrepreneurial spirit.
Let me know how it goes!

It arrived - I have posted some pics. See my thread 'My new car!'

I can reccomend Single Vehicle if anyone wants someone to move a car. He even managed to lift the engine and gearbox on single handed and was worried about damaging it...
