Another vote for the A35 I learnt to drive at one of those wheels. I saw the picture and A35 "jumped" to mind at once, it was a horrible thing... Because, remember cold clammy winter mornings in the days when car heaters were optional extras and as inefficient as a politician? It had lost much of its glossy surface in places and on cold damp mornings when the screen had more water inside than the pool in the park the grip areas were rough and slimy plastic that your thumbnail sought out in traffic jams and could scrape off slivers of "used dirty bakelite" whilst waiting to move another car's length. Our dad's A35' wheel had been savaged by some messy drivers before we ever got our hands on it. It always left a dirty residue on my hands. It was a truly horrible thing, but 'cos I was learnuing to drive, doubling the clutch to get through the box at times too, I also loved it fervently. Did I say it looks like an A35 wheel to me yet?

| I hate to disagree, but I don't think it is A35. It looks too small, going on the overall diameter with the thickness of the rim and size of the hub. Here's a pic of an A35 wheel and, as you can see, the spokes are angled.

Mmmm looks like a bus wheel to me!

Bill, I love this description. "remember cold clammy winter mornings in the days when car heaters were optional extras and as inefficient as a politician? It had lost much of its glossy surface in places and on cold damp mornings when the screen had more water inside than the pool in the park the grip areas were rough and slimy plastic that your thumbnail sought out in traffic jams and could scrape off slivers of "used dirty bakelite" Who would've thought that such a description could make one feel nostalgic. :)

Hmm On cold hard appraisal Dave is probably right 'cos the spokes don't have the knobbly bits part way in from the rim. Lawrence, it seems you were there too then. Glad the stuff wot I wrote gave you a little smile, seing that wheel took me flying back down the years. (but now I'm wondering what wheel it was cos it's dead familiar)

I've driven such, Herald maybe? Steering wheel snot comes off with alcohol. Even harder to get of leather or plastic covers! FRM

I think the A30, A35, mini, minivan, mini pickup etc etc etc. Allof these as I remember had the same wheel. It was NOT the one in the photo as my endearing memory was that they all had spokes that were not opposite and were angled down. The spokes of the one in the photo are directly oppoite, not sure I have seen such an example?

My guess is it's from a small comercial vehicle.. Mark.
M T Boldry
I reckon it is some sort of Ford maybe an Anglia or something similar. Jon it is difficult to see in the picture but how much is it dished?
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo
| Robert, It's not dished too much, I'll have to measure. Here's a photo of the back side. Note the large "finger grips"
|
Jon Saylor
I measured from the top of where the horn push would fit to the top of the wheel rim and got 1 1/4" inch (31.75mm). And another photo ...

Jon Saylor
Yup Bill, it's the bakelite clammy grimey feel, and the dirt you could get under your finger nails. Everybody must have done the same thing with them sitting in traffic :). I don't recognise that wheel per se, but they were all of a kind back then, unless you had a reasonably expensive car. I driver a lot of vans back in the 70's and most had wheels like that. A girlfriend had an A40, I think it might have had a similar wheel too.
