MG Midget and Sprite General - Bugs splatters
the recent hot weather reminded me to make a lot easier to remove bugs splatters from being welded on to the windscreen and other glass Rain-X rain repellent (other brands are available) doesn’t work as well on Spridget windscreens as it does on modern cars but it works equally well on both to make cleaning off welded on bug splatters from the windscreen and other glass surfaces I use it on not just the windscreen but also the headlights, side/indicators (on 1275), external mirror and door windows To clean the windscreen and all other exterior glass I then use a spray mixture of 95% water, 5% windscreen wash and a splash of Rain-X rejuvenator washer additive and cheap (less absorbent) paper kitchen roll This time I used Halfords’ own rain repellent as they’d run out of Rain-X so I’ll see if theirs is any good I’ve also had the same 500 ml bottle of Rain-X super concentrate windscreen washer additive for years as with this one it’s a one squirt per litre of washer fluid as opposed to now half a bottle per litre I’ve had the same bottle through a few cars and add it to mine and the wife’s car for a number of years – my wife moans if her screen needs recoating as she’ got so used to it being on the screen and she uses her washer a lot but not the wiper so much because of the Rain-X We keep the wipers clean and never use them on a dry windscreen so the coating lasts a long time

I guess the reason it doesn't work as well on old cars is because the windscreens are near vertical. I have some similar stuff - RainAway - it seems to be quite destructive on stockinette duster stuff which tends to disintegrate a week or two after it has been used to apply the substance.

good point about the uprightness of classic windscreens I meant to put that I've never noticed Rain-X destoying the stockinette stuff but I usuall throw it away after use as the smell is quite addictive to me with the Halfords own this time I applied it as usual with stockinette and a fresh piece to buff it to see what the results with be for smears normally I put on with stockinette but then spray with tap water and dry and polish off with cheap (less absorbent) paper kitchen roll as this leave a good smear free finish and looks very clean

For bug removal Autoglym Active Insect Remover Spray it on thick leave for 5 mins Wash off mint.com

I tried Autoglym Active Insect Remover a few years ago and personally found it a bit messy and certainly is expensive in the boot wing cavity I carry a spray bottle of water/washer/rejuvenator and cheap (less absorbent) paper kitchen roll, using it at journey's end start of next journey, it's always very popular on tours A bottle of Rain-x (other brands available) last me months if not years and the cleaning mixture couldn't get much cheaper the cheap (less absorbent) paper kitchen rolls are the most expensive bit so are bought only when on special offer and would last much longer if everybody else didn't use them up

If your local pound shop sells "Carpride" aerosol products, they do a flysquash remover that smells suspiciously of Paraffin. I bought some, but haven't used it yet. I have however used the carb cleaner and can confirm that it works a treat. They do brake cleaner and various other automotive aerosols which all seem OK and obviously all £1 each. Bernie.

Bernie do any of these products leave a residue on the wi,ndscreen or affect the rubber blades, what's it like next time it rains - just wonder not disputing whilst the Rain-X type products don't bead the rain as much on Spridget as modern it does work so you use your wipers and washer less and the screen seems to keep cleaner so the bug bit is a bit of a by-product but very useful

Nigel. I don't really know about the flysquash one as I've never used it, but if it is Paraffin it would probably leave a bit of an oily residue. Bernie.

Bernie, I think I'll stick to the Rain-x type products and methods then

Yeah but does rain x do anything to quite the screams of the ceikatea bug... im going deaf by the moment... yesterday they all went silent for about 5 minutes.... the insanity of the that moment from just pure lack of noise was like a chapter right out of edger allen poe, the lack of sound actually hurt my ears.... i cant wait for those bugs to finally die off Prop

no idea Prop I live in a quiet community such noise would be frowned up having just typed that - someone has just fired up a large drill or cutting machine !

Nigel. I just used some of the "Carpride" tarspot remover or flysquash remover then washed my car. It didn't leave a deposit and it seems to have left the Rainex intact. It got rid of the few bugs that were there, so I guess it works. Bernie.

Bernie, washing your car on a sunny day, wrong on so many levels :) if your windscreen is Rain-x you should need to use the Carpride stuff to remove bugs my very cheap water solution should do it on PH there were some saying they could remove the Rain-x from their windscreens, lawd knows how they must have applied it ordinary petroluem based polishes will easily get tar off paintwork too I've used loads of different (not too expensive) car cleaning products over the years with different bottles for each item but after using some pro stuff I don't bother much now on a white Skoda (Esttelle 2 !! in 1999) I polished the four doors with four diffent polishes Raindance, Auto Glym, Turtle and ? couldn't see or fell a difference between then I used to use Crystal sumat (bikers stuff from Canada? via Wales) on the fibreglass cars good stuff but got expensive knew a guy that took on a Auto Glym round he made so much money he bought another and got two guys to do the work whilst he played golf

Nigel. I was in the shade. I've been washing cars for quite a few years now. Bernie.

Bernie, it was sunny you should be driving the car not washing it :) oh, and yet again I missed out the word not (below) . . . if your windscreen is Rain-Xed you should NOT need to use the Carpride stuff to remove bugs my very cheap water solution should do it . . .
N Atkins
and below another missing not . . . on PH there were some saying they could NOT remove the Rain-x from their windscreens, lawd knows how they must have applied it . . . what is it about typing that word !!??!! all meant in a light hearted way Bernie
