MG Midget and Sprite General - Best equipment for waxoyling
Anyone got any information on the best equipment (professional standard) for applying Waxoyl? I always find using the standard Waxoyl pump systems so frustrating. Jets that continually block, poor spray patterns, etc. Just badly engineered plastic trigger pumps etc make a messy job just so much worse! I have a compressor, there must be some decent equipment that will do a proper job with this stuff without all of the aggro! Ideas? Guy

I did it with a compressor and the spraycan attached for undercoating. Normally those cans dont come with a flexible hose with nozzle. I borrowed one from a friend.

Bilt Hamber is your friend. Easy to apply, good spray pattern good, perfect for box sections. When I've used Waxoyl I got as much on me as on the car. I use the brush on stuff (Dynax UB) and S50 Aerosol for the awkward to get to places and box sections. Like waxoyl you need to put the tin in a bucket of hot water. Couple of tins and a couple of Aerosols should be enough for the underside. http://www.carnaubawaxshop.co.uk/shop/index.php?view=category&category_id=16

Thanks for the advice. Bas, - do you mean a shultz gun, as used for spraying underseal?. I have a couple of what I think are called paraffin spray guns but they spray using a venturi suction method which doesn't work well with Waxoyl - they very quickly clog up. I think it needs some sort of positive pressure fed gun. RF - I have used Bilt Hamber products before, paints and de-rusting solutions, and agree that they are very good. However in this instance I have about 20 litres of Waxoyl which I was given so really need to use that up first! Hence the question on equipment to spray it, rather than if there were better products available. Thanks anyway, all useful stuff! Guy

join a compressor to the waxoyl self pump drum, and keep the drum in a bucket of hot water. We made an adaptor to go on the compressor from the filler thing (and turned the pressure down so it didn't explode). it worked really well with a bit of windscreen washer tube on the nozzle thing, very squirty. perhaps not professional standard but cheap and amusing watching people run away from the expanding waxoyl drum...

I used the Waxoyl kit sprayer several years ago, thinning the stuff with turpentine (white spirit) as directed, and with the can sitting in a pot of hot water. Using the sprayer nozzle, it was fine. But with the skinny hose, it sort of sputtered and dribbled. If I were to do it again today (and yes, I probably should do it again), I think I'd use more heat, and a heat that's maintainable - that is, I'd place the Waxoyl can in a deep pot of water, and then put that on the gas burner base of my BBQ smoker. (Think heavy iron tripod with a gas burner and grate on top.) That way I could get it nice and hot and keep it that way. That, plus the compressor method mentioned above, would probably yield much better results than I saw originally. -:G:-

Guy, I found the same problems with the standard waxoyl kit so as I had access to a lathe I made some accesories. One was a wand to apply to stuff and another was a 2m tube assembly about 10mm diameter that could be poked down chassis rails etc. Both used the waxoyl pressure can for the feed but the business end also used air pressure to to break up the fluid stream and spray it around in a cone shape.

Getting some good ideas now. I like the method of the exploding Waxoyl drum. Where is the best place to stand the drum to get maximum coverage of the whole car?
Guy Weller
the best place to put it is next to some things that will be ruined/ 'made more interesting' if hit by exploding waxoyl - this guarantees that it won't ever explode or tip over, or in fact leak at all. some good things are: grandads car, sisters new mirror that she has just painted for her new house, that sort of thing. Makes clothes better as well so make sure to wear your best suit when applying.

Rob's right. If done correctly, you can rustproof your entire household in seconds, not to mention family and pets. ;-) -:G:-

Guy, it was a shultz gun and the only thing to take care of is that with the waxoyl its coming out more easily than with the underbody coating. I managed to get 6,5 liters inside the Midget:-)

Guy, most houses here have sprinkler systems. Some of the smaller sprinkler heads are about 8mm diameter. My mate drilled a hole through his sill under the 'a' panel and inserted the sprinkler head on a length of plastic tube. it was a 360 degree head. he then waxoyled through the tube lifting it up and down. Let me know if you want me to send you one. shawn.dawn1atbigpond.com (@).

Shawn, That's a good idea. Certainly better than the waxoyl supplied device which consists of a plastic tube with a nail stuffed in the end! Rather than you send me one (thanks for the offer) I have a mate who has a fire & security business and he may have such a thing. The 360 degree head makes me think of another idea. There must be some way of spraying paint on the inside of box sections using a similar device - a long tube with a 360 head, or even just a 180 degree fan head. It wouldn't matter too much about the odd run or bit of "orange peel"! I still vividly remember a short blast down a few miles of twisty Yorkshire lanes following you in your white car one night - topless of course! I think there was some urgency to get to the filling station before they closed and I think the idea was to drive faster so as to get there quickly before we ran out of petrol! Guy

if ever there were two blokes I could believe that of it's you pair Hi Shawn, missing us yet?

I miss all the people we left behind, but life moves on, and we are making new friends. I clean windows now, and do handyman jobs, as well as project manage kitchen and bathroom fitting. I used to use the car most days, nowadays it is mainly used for club events - autokhanas etc. I really miss the drive outs to social events on an evening in Yorkshire. Some of the drives home were epic.
