MG Midget and Sprite General - Ashley hardtop on ebay
apologies for the plug but I know these are not that common and seem to be in favour of late... just search on ashley / also on MASC classifieds TIA
David Smith
found 2?! 330418224544 and 280482325504 the 2nd says it for a mkII midget but i do not see anny diffrence? can anny body help? if it fits my '66 mk II (detachable hood type) i'd be putting in a bid
Onno Könemann
does anyone know if this would fit on a midget 1500cc.also how big a job is it to take on and off?. cheers.
roy judd
the top one fits on a 1500cc they have the same hood construction as the 1275 cars
Onno Könemann
though i now have read up and if the info on the W&P register is correct it should only be for the early wind up cars?
Onno Könemann
eh Onno? Not sure where you got that from on the website. Read the paragraph under the photos of Laurent's and Patrick Espinosa's cars, about the booted Ashley for "post-frogs": "There were two versions: for the sidescreen Mk II Sprite / Mk I Midget, and for the later wind-up window spridgets. The side windows in the hardtop for side-screen cars are shallower than in the version for wind-up windows, despite their initial appearance of being identical." I don't see why one wouldn't fit a 1500, as long as the Ashley hardtop was a wind-up window rather than a side-screen model.
Mothy
sorry Mothy you are right i mis read. i had some what of a confused moment because of the normal hardtops. these differ between the fixed drop top and detachabel hood. where the ashley one apperently does not? possibly because it goes over the rear deck and is not hindered by the diffrences?
Onno Könemann
spot on! but you have to remove the car's steel boot lid first of course :o)
Mothy
then i'd better start bidding hey ;)
Onno Könemann
id rather you didnt cos i want it. :-(
roy judd
been wanting one for years so sorry besides it is much more period correct on a '66 mkII ;)
Onno Könemann
Have a look for a bermuda one Roy they look great on the 1500
rachmacb
AFAIK there IS a difference between MK2 & MK3 wind-up window versions, as with other hardtops.
Dave O'Neill 2
Roy do you know W&P register? http://www.williamsandpritchardregister.co.uk/ onder het w&p sebring GT head check out the oft mistaken. it works as a nice overview of most of the hardtops made for the midget. plus it is a great web sit (i always lose track of time there) Dave i can't see anny diffrnce on the 2 offerd on e-bay
Onno Könemann
| Onno The rear bodywork is quite different between the Mk2 and Mk3, so I don't see how the same hardtop can fit both. On my Mk3, the hardtop sat on the horizontal lip which runs from the B-post on one side, all the way around to the B-post on the other side. The Mk2 does not have this lip, so my hardtop would not have fitted a Mk2.
|
Dave O'Neill 2
id never seen a bermuda hardtop before.i like it. i think im gona get a few diffrent hardtops infact.
roy judd
onno i see what you mean when you say you lose track of time on w&ps site, its an intresting site.still cant see another 1 like mine though, closest iv seen was the healey warwick, anyone no what my hardtop is??
|
roy judd
has this profile behind the rear quarterlight windows.
|
roy judd
Dave thank you for the first clear picture of a mk III hardtop! Now i am sure both hardtops mentioned above will fit a mkII. because both do not have the flat part on it.
Onno Könemann
well, the one I have for sale came with a K reg car - but not fitted to it, so I suppose it could be anything! I'll take some more detail pics tonight and see if they will help identify it; the issue of the difference between Mk2 and Mk3 tops does seem to come up often...
David Smith
Onno and I still want to confirm if this is for a Mk2 or Mk3...
|
David Smith
| Roy, that's a nice hardtop and not one that I've seen before. I'd also love to know what it is - and add it to the site once identified? Dave, you are right, there is definitely a little cut- in on your old Ashley hardtop to accomodate the Mk 3 lip which isn't there on my old Ashley hardtop (shown below on Patrick Espinosa's Mk 2 Midget in France where it now lives) -
|
Mothy
pic 2
|
David Smith
mothy if you can ID it then your welcome to put the photo on your site. infact if you want i can take some better photos of it.i have spent hours on the web looking at midget hardtops and iv seen some cool ones but nothing like mine.
roy judd
pic 3 - so I'm tending towards this being a Mk2...
|
David Smith
dave im still the winning bider on this.dont think im gona end up winning it though. :-(
roy judd
It does look Mk2-ish, so I'm afraid it won't fit Roy's car.
Dave O'Neill 2
oh cock! thats typical. ;-(
roy judd
Reckon that means you should deduct Roy's bids, and drop the price for Onno ;)! Rach - can't stand fleabay coz people outbid her ... grrr!
rachmacb
knowing my luck im gona end up winning the auction now. rach the trick to ebay is to place a higher bid than anyone elso.then you dont get outbid.lol.
roy judd
hurmph - doesn't help that some people live closer to the item so don't have to count in transport costs :( Got to do something though - ain't gonna get another MOT on smiling sweetly alone again ......
rachmacb
i duno.depends how sweetly you smile. what do you need for the midget?
roy judd
I smile sweetly enough to have got her through the last one ;)! The drivers seat is pretty wrecked out, and, to be honest, it's not just the MOT it's gonna fail, I broke the bottom of my back years ago, so it's not exactly designed to make it feel great ... so, I've decided it's about time I did something about it!
rachmacb
you ant thinking of getting rid of primrose are you????
roy judd
LOL - not a chance ........! Even when I'm 101, I'll still be driving her and scaring the poodeeedels out of the locals :) (Thankfully, the MOT tester will have long since have died by then ;)) Rach - what's the point of arriving in hell with body intact?!
rachmacb
Roy if you might end up with it let me know on the other hand i hope i just get it on my (to be placed) bid Mothy if i get it you can have all the pics you want in the as is state and when refurbd off course
Onno Könemann
thats true cos the devil is gona poke around and break it anyway so do the job before him. i went for a drive in the rain today.how much fun is it getting the ass end out in the corners. lots!
roy judd
onno place your bid.im worried im gona win it and have to put it in the garden as in ornament.
roy judd
still 8 days left enough time to make you sweat ;P
Onno Könemann
oh man onno thats just mean.just the other day i was saying what a nice world the midget world seems to be. ;-]
roy judd
Lol the de'il may care ... Not :) Go for the last few moments Onno - lets see how panicked a man can get :)!!!!!
rachmacb
rach your mean ,hey if i win it il restore and respray it then sell it on. i may live in wiltshire but im still the cockney conman at heart. lol.
roy judd
Lol it's all lies that I'm nice :)
rachmacb
hm so i had heard, ;->
roy judd
if it realy is only your bid i might mail David and see if we can come to an agreement. that way you won't have to sweat that long
Onno Könemann
Onno, on the other hand is a really nice person - and very kind :)
rachmacb
thanks or is it just cos you dont want the cockney conman making a few quid on it? lol.
roy judd
Or maybe I know that poor Primerose is outclassed by most of the Dutch cars and I have to be extra nice or they'll leave me some 50km behind them .....:(
rachmacb
you making a few quid is no problem for me although i doubt you would (making money and classic car owner ship never been able to combine those) i'd just hate to los the auction by 1 quid or so if someone sniped me and i realy realy want it now if i get it what to do with the project single shell works look racing hardtop i have lying around....
Onno Könemann
come on you lot! 23 fresh posts since the piccies and only 1 opinion, and Dave doesn't sound totally convinced.
David Smith
Rach, You just have to learn to play the game. Figure out just what the item is really worth to you. Your "magic number" needs to include any shipping charges, etc and should represent an amount that, if you win the item you don't feel robbed, but if you lose the item you don't mind cuz it wasn't worth that much. NEVER bid until the last few seconds of the "auction". Bid once, just as late as you can feel confident that your internet connection will get the bid into place before the close of auction. You won't win every time, but the ones you lose went for more than the item was worth to you. David "don't need no sniper" Lieb
David Lieb
onno i was joking. i hope you do win it and its on my max bid and i will not be placeing another bid. have you got a photo of racing hardtop? rach iv just placed a pair of tan seats on ebay . if they any better than yours or if you can rebuild them and you can work a way of getting them up to you you can have them. heres the link. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280485993013&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT
roy judd
Lol I don't really - I'm just mostly narked coz I HAVE to buy now as I left it too long, but hey ho such is life! I don't like not being able to do what I should be able to, so am cross with me;). I did go a couple of pounds over, and might have gone more if I'd not just bought the new horse ...;)
rachmacb
I'll check them out on the computer tomorrow and contact you - there's bound to be a courier company .....
rachmacb
they ant great but iv sat in worse.the seats in my car i repared with slivers of ply wood and are nice and comfortable.
roy judd
Okies - I've stuck them on watch - was going to use this opportunity to put in mgf seats but am running out of time and can't drive her as she is at the moment :(
rachmacb
well there there if you want them. i was thinking of mgf seats for mine. how hard are they to fit?
roy judd
I'm told really easy ... Don't you dare outbid me though ;). Transport will be the big thing that I'll check out - think it's rain tomorrow so should get some time .........
rachmacb
if you decide you want the seats iv got dont bid on them.just sort a courer out and you can have them for >FREE<. cos thats the magic number.
roy judd
Lol anything to save me from having to sit in the passenger side making vroom vroom noises ...;)
rachmacb
hey dont start knocking the vroom vrooming again. ;-)
roy judd
Lol it's all jealousy - Arie and Prop get to vroom vroom in nice comfy garages- as probably do you - but I have to sit outside .....!
rachmacb
yep i gota garage to vroom vroom in. theres alot to be said about abit of outdoor vrooming though.
roy judd
HEY. I vroom vroom too.
Seth Brecklin
| As these threads tend to do this also has spirald out of control ;) roy it is a bit of a mess and has some cuts made to fit on a mkII the inside is just plain Fiber Glas and there are no fixings
|
Onno Könemann
oh well never mind onno, did you get the ashley top as i notice the auctions ended early on ebay.
roy judd
yes, posts all read, and all sorted... assuming it's for a Mk2
David Smith
cool,i was having kittens thinking i was gona end up with a hardtop i couldnt use. so was the consensus that i wont get an ashley top to fit a 1500 or was it just this one that wouldnt? roy
roy judd
Interestingly, David's Ashley is identical to one I just bought & sold - right down to the colour. That one ended up in Germany.
Max max-at-midgetmax-dot-com
SEE,EVERYONES GETTING ASHLEY HARDTOPS EXCEPT FOR ME,EVEN THE GERMANS!.ITS NOT BLOODY FAIR!, >stomps of and slams the door, scaring the cats who run and hide under the bed.<

roy judd
Lol now now - there's a rather nice 66 White midget with one on - you could always buy the whole thing ...!!!!
rachmacb
I saw that and it looks very nice. Roy, Mine wouldn't fit yours as it's for a Frogeye
Gary Lazarus
yeah its very nice, the problem is im having trouble convinceing my wife that i need another hardtop let alone another midget. im really thinking of biding on this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160418281934&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT reckon itd be quite a laugh. rach i will be at both midget50 and mglive.

rachmacb
you wont sell primrose, get another old banger for day to day use and only use her for fun. thats what i do. my dayly use car is a perodua nippa.............. ok has every finished laughing yet? its actuly a really good car.
roy judd
old photo but thats my dayly drive.sensible, cheap to insure, and does 65mpg all day any day. that then leaves me with more money to lavish/waste on the love of my life and whats left over after buying midget bits gets spent on my wife.lol. sh*t dont tell her i said that ok!
|
roy judd
Lol shouts loud enough to be heard ...! I have two 4x4s - one to tow and one for the 6 months I'm not towing :). If it wasn't that I think only my death will save me now - don't you believe I wouldn't ... Of course, she might just have gone into hiding :)
rachmacb
leave her alone. iv just been on the midget50 website and it dont tell you a great deal. any idea on ticket prices and stuff,is there gona b a place to chuck a tent for the night?.
roy judd
Holy pooh what is it with men?????!! It's not been properly launched yet - there is still a few months ;). All will become clear when it is :)
rachmacb
its called being organised, however as you dont have a penis you lack the abilaty to understand what that means.organ--ised
roy judd
ok rach im gona be honest and admit to being a dick. i thought midget50 was this year and was only a couple of months away.
|
roy judd
... shall take that as an apology then shall I?!
rachmacb
grovel grovel.kiss ass kiss ass, sorry sorry xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
roy judd
This thread makes Prop's worst excesses seem like gentle logic and sweet reason.
Nick
LOL - oh well, hopefully it will balance out the opinion that I am overly-organised ...! Perhaps you should sell your 1500 and buy that real nice white one - or just not spend time on fleabay oogling all the pretty hardtops!
rachmacb
Prop, old boy - when I say worst excesses, I mean your poetic flights of fancy and cutting-edge modern verse.
Nick
LOL - Prop has abandoned us for his now running car ;)
rachmacb
sell my 1500, are you aving a giraffe! im never gona sell it. when i turn up my toes there gona av to dig a midget shaped hole to bury me.
