MG Midget and Sprite General - Anyone do P&O cruising? (NSC)

Just wondering if anyone is a user of P&O cruises and has been sent info on tipping?

No fly-tipping allowed.

Now if it was Royal Carribean Bob, I could help.

Thanks Neil

My home AOL account has been poor for a day or two so have not replied.

It is P an O that I wanted to chat about, although we have used Royal Carribean and they are IMO simply a rip off tipping wise as the gratuities are already included in the price that you pay so how does that encourage qualty service. Also they charge TAX in the middle of oceans, who is that paid too? Thats my gripe with them LOL.

Anyway P and O

When travellng with P&O they suggest you tip the steward £X and say your waiter £Y

I always do this because the wages of the stewards and waiters are reduced by P&O simply because they hope the passengers will make up the difference in tips. It is a silly situation and I know of many people who refuse to tip and so the poor individuals in service work for next to nothing. (Clarkson would be pleased no doubt)

Anyway I have received a letter from them saying that tips will now be directly charged to your on board account and distributed to the service on board. You can opt out which I am sure many will but why do they not simply pay the people a decent wage and slightly increase the cost of the holiday?

I needed that rant.

Same story over here... our son works as a server in a popular bar & grill restaurant chain, and is paid well below minimum wage, in the assumption that tips will (hopefully more than) make up the difference. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't... it's highly variable, which makes budgeting sort of a hit-or-miss exercise.

Some restaurants add a compulsory gratuity if you have an unusually large party, similar to Royal Caribbean, I suppose. Still, I think I'd feel proper in slipping my attendant an additional tip, if I was well impressed with his/her service, and wanted them to know that I appreciated them personally.

I have a part share in a canal boat and the only tip I get is...

wait for it...

dont fall in!!!

Dave - engine in bits - what have I done????

One of the reasons I have enjoyed my trips to Japan, absolutely no tipping! It is actually considered an insult to tip, implying that the person who provided the service is not worth decent wages. The service is generally superb and the costs similar to the UK, so how come the reverse is true here?

Hi, we have been on a few cruises and whilst it can be an extra sum on your bill at the end of your holiday I do agree with the added tips as the members of staff behind the scenes (laundry room/maintenence etc) will get a share.

At least the waiters/bar staff have the opportunity to be face to face with people who can reward them for good customer service.

That said it doesn't give an employer the right to presume that members of staff will be tipped and some employees will expect a tip regardless of the service they give.

If they did pay the staff a better wage then the cost of the tips that are added to your on board account would just be added to the price of your holiday so your expenditure wouldn't be any different.

Its a no win situation!!
