MG Midget and Sprite General - Aluminium header tanks

Is there a specific type of replacement header tank needed for our cars? The type that fits on the bulkhead.

I would imagine it's a top entry to make sure it's above the top heater outlet?

New engine fired up tonight, megajolt is working! Got to get the laptop plugged in next.

I think a header tank is different from an expansion tank but haven't checked. You could easily have one made in alumnium alloy though I'm not sure if there would be much of a weight saving though you could have it made any shape you wanted it to be. If you had a completely cylindrical design it might help the weight saving.

Any reason why you want to do this?

Matt, is the Frontline any good for your purpose?
Its alloy and used alot on K-series conv.
Its made to fit level on top of the footwell.

I want to use the area where it is now for a decent sized oil catch tank.
Also, I hear that the high level header/expansion tanks are useful for keeping bubbles out of the coolant system.
Doesn't have to be ally to start with. I've seen a few racers pics that have them on the bulkhead.

Matt. It's a bit of a crap picture taken on my phone back in March when we first put the engine in. Here's my header tank which is fitted at the highest point possible.

It's got a Ford logo moulded into the plastic and the angle of the underside of the tank is a perfect fit for the slope of the top of the footwell, which means that the level indicator is running horizontal.

It's held on by a bolt which is easily undone and then it allows it to be held up high on it's Samco hose to get all the air out of its system. Simple!

If it's something you want to look further on then I'll try to find you a part number if there is one moulded into the tank (or you can come over and have a look yourself).
