MG Midget and Sprite General - '66 parts on a '72
I bought a '66 or so Midget today. It has a very strait and rust free nose, which I need for my '72. The first difference I noticed was the lack of sidelight holes. Also, there is no center support in the grill. I plan on using the fenders, bonnet, valance (top and bottom) bumper posts, and the grill surround/ radiator support, and maybe the inner arches What ill be the biggest differences, other than sidelites and hood support rod?

If you check you'll find that the front marker lamps are located about an inch higher on the 66 wings than on the later ones for clearance with the wider bumpers used in 66. Other than that no other differences other than what you've already mentioned.

If it is a mkII you will have a different rear deck and a different softtop and generaly a better looking car than a 72! So use the whole shell! You will also have a different bonnet support

The car is a MKII, but I can't use the whole shell- no VIN #'s or title, and I have too much time and $ in mine to swap everything around. The 2 issues I have are; stamping or cutting holes for the side lites, and the radiator support/ grill area. Will a crossflow '72 style radiator slip right in? Will a '72 style grill and trim fit right in? There is no center support, like on my car

Radiator and grille are interchangeable. AFAIK the centre support should be there on a Mk2. Is your original one salvageable?

As Bill says, the sidelight or marker light holes are higher on the mk2s than the later cars. I wonder if when Phil says sidelights, he is refering to the repeater lamps found on the sides of the wings (fenders) on American spec mk3 Midgets,( If you have T. Horler's book, look bottom of page 91, you can see the rears on the red car and fronts on the blue one). But all front wings have holes for lights beneath the headlights, even 1500s have holes for the bumper support irons in that position. Horlers book also mentions the front centre panel having a valance with a stiffener even on the mk1 Midget. Whether this refers to the missing item as on Phil's car, or the extra folded piece behind the bottom of the valance, I can't say. My own car is a mk3 Sprite and the front panel was replaced in the restoration and it has the centre support, but it is an after market item by Ashley Hinton and I can't remember about the damaged original one. If the centre support is worrying you Phil, why not weld one in when you get the panel off the '66 car? After all, it's only a piece of U section mild steel. If you are using the front wings, you may have to weld in a bracket on the right side one to take the telescopic bonnet stay from your '72. As Dave says, all the rest of your '72 stuff should fit without problems. Bernie.
