MG Midget and Sprite General - 23 April...

'I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

Have a good St George's day all :)
James Bilsland

David Banks

david its ok for you scots, your allowed to be proud to be scottish. in england if you fly the st georges cross then people think you must be national front or bnp or summit.lol.
roy j

Saint Piran's Day,5th of March.

Brad (Sprite IV 1380)

roy j

Lol that'll be German Lizzy then!
rachmacb

can we send the English back across the Tamar too then?
Brad (Sprite IV 1380)

Well here I am at work with the Midge flying the St George flag from the boot. Flame Red matches the flag exactly.

With roof down and in motion the flag flies true and staight - albeit it gets whipped forwards rather than backwards! Is this a Scottish/Welsh/Irish atmospheric conspiracy?

Only had praise so far so guess BNP or NF are thick round here (no further comment offered as there maybe some sensitive types out there in Spridget land).

CHARGE!
Gavin Rowles

""so guess BNP or NF are thick round here""

I think that applies in most parts :-)
K Harris

Roy - Your right! Just about every other house and business up here (especially in the Highlands and Islands) proudly has a Saltyre flying but down South in England it tells a different story!

Now how long do we think it will be before someone starts quoting the 5th verse of the English National anthem to wind us up??!!

David Banks

Have you thought about turning the car around into the wind ...!

I think slowly the NF associations are dying out thankfully
rachmacb

General Wade didn't have much luck in crushing the 'Rebellious Scots' - Cumberland had a better crack at it - but many of his officers and men were Lowlanders...

'Flower of Scotland' has a bit to say about giving the English a kicking IIRC... ;-)

Though I've always preferred 'Jerusalem' myself :)
James Bilsland

Im not aware of St. george....But, what the heck, If its a day to celebrate, then Hip HIP to St. George, and my his great deed or scarifice to humanity be long remembered!

St George was (in legend) a Roman Soldier in Palestine who killed a dragon.

Begs some questions:

Why on earth does that make him England's patron saint when he never even came here?

Why would the nationalistic types adopt the flag of a palestinian as a symbol of wanting 'foreigners' out of Britain?

I'm with Brad anyway, St George is not my patron saint!
MarkH1

Mark,
Because they're not very bright.
Those who seem to shout loudest about immigration and "foreigners stealing our jobs" usually seem to be those who've never done a stroke of work in their lives themseves.
I think its a great shame that the nationalist/ jingoist element has made the majority of the population uncomfortable about flying the St George's Cross but the first thing you do think of is a shaven headed thickset thug with a pitbull.
Matt1275 Bucks

Wasn't it just a bigish worm?!

What gets me is that the shops are promoting it in just another profit making exercise so they can get lots of money for tacky hats and rubbish flags that wear down after a couple of weeks - how gullable does one have to be...?
rachmacb

LOL.

Im guessing this holiday is like our st. pats day, it has little historic value here in the states, but its still a fun day, that all enjoy...we all wear green, some towns have parades, green beer, with cabbage and corned beef, lots of flags and green clover, and if your not wearing the green then any and all get to pinch you (seriously)...personally I look forward to the day...its just a good day to meet up with friends and shake off the winter blues

So it may appear to be a non real holiday, but Any thing that permotes community cant be a bad thing.

Id have to say, If i was there, Id like St. goerge day, even the name sounds fun.

Prop...slaying a dragon vs. driving the snakes from ireland...HHHmmmm that would make for a good movie.

I agree with Matt entirely

We have a group of individuals in this country who "fly the flag" As described they are generally unemployed, drink to extreme, claim all foreigners are scum etc etc also they have done nothing whatsoever to justify their living in our country except they were extremely lucky to have been born here, that in my opinion is not enough!. Most of the foreigners I have seen in our country are LEGALLY here and will work non stop to make our country great, who is better for us?

Not only that but then we have the lager louts in Europe wearing the cross of St George around their a*se and we wonder why those conservative English amongst us refuse to honour our flag?
What is the current expression Bill? Go figure? is that English? LOL.
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

isn't the *current* expression "get real" Bob?

after "I agree with Nick" last week ...

LOL
Mothy

Well it certainly isn't "go figure" think that is an american expression that makes no sense in English?
However I can understand "get real" LOL.
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

ok - whatever I write here is not meant in the any way to be seen to be offensive or anything else - just a vague attempt to try and explain why St George's Day is nothing like St Pats day in America ...!

St Georges' Day hasn't been celebrated for at least the past "in my lifetime" and is now just slowly being "reclaimed" due to the current sad state of affairs. For many years, England has been the lead nation of the Union, and the others have been "negative nations" - ie, NOT English! However, since devolution and the emergence of a new confidence, certainly amongst the Scots, then England has been feeling a little bit down in the mouth.

During the 70s/80s there were alot of race problems by the National Front who used the flag and sort of took it places that it should never have gone - and, as such, it had taken on a complete negativity, and most normal-thinking Brits (Brits, not just English!) saw it as an emblem of hate, rather than patriotism.

The attempts to re-emerge as a nation, with pride and standing again, and the picking up of the flag from the bad images are, sadly, of course, being exploited by commercial gains - just like Valentines' Day, Christmas, Easter and any other money making day that could be inserted here.

As a Scot, living in England, I would like to see some level of reasonable patriotism being done again - because, it is only with that that there would be a drop in the anti-immigration stuff that many come out with ......

Oh yes - St Pats - well - he ain't your saint, and it's just an excuse for a piss up isn't it?!!!!!
rachmacb

Having also lived in Scotland for a good number of years i had a St Piran sticker on my car, bless the Scotts they thought i was too tight to get a colour version of the Saltire.
Brad (Sprite IV 1380)

I bet all those plastic flags are made in China!
