MG Midget and Sprite General - 2 pack paint over powder coating

Can it be done? Any problems with thinners etc?
Tarquin

I'm off to speak to a friend in the paint shop at Morgans today, I will ask him what they use
Nick Sayle

Its doable but whatfore?

I had the doors and bootlid dipped to clear the rust etc, it's hard to get a decent coat of paint inside the doors, so my mate next door to me at work said he would give them a light powder coating inside to seal it. Then I can just paint over the top. Anyway they are done now so thats that! Will be primering them tomorrow night. Top coat is going on this weekend weather permitting.

had the engine running at the weekend! Sounds great!
Tarquin

Hey tarquin,

the powder coat takes about 90 days to cure complete, I wouldnt spray over the top for 2 reasons, the solvent issue you raised, I dont know about paint thinners and reducers But Acetone WILL eat powder coat paint if its not cured out... after 90 days even acetone will not effect the powder coat

the 2nd issue I see with painting over powder coat is adhision, if you get past the solvent issue, getting the primer and paint to stick and stay on will be dicey at best... the powder coat is to hard and shinny for a good bond to take place

Another issue with painting over fresh powder coat (IM guessing on this) are paint problems that may look like fish eye, because the powder coat is still venting the VOCs, so if you paint over the top of the PC, it may vent the VOCs thur the 2 pack paint and you may have the look a of a 12 year old pimple face as the paint drys

Agian, My knowledge is limited as I do sub out the powder coat work and they give me lots of insight, So I dont know if the powdercoat you have is differant from what we have

Just an idea, before you start,,, do a powder coat test on some scrap sheet metal then paint over it like you will with the 2 pack and see what happens, easier to deal with that then on the car.

Prop...Im STILL a huge fan of powder coat
Prop

Prop, I dont know how they powdercoat in the US but with us its just melting powderpaint onto a object.
We have plenty of adhesiveprimers that go over powdercoat.
We have to because where we live on the coast powdercoat dont last long because of the salt.

I wouldnt worry Matt but if the inside of the doors are powdered why paint them over?
Unless you want the body-collor everywhere.
Dont forget after painting the inside of the doors to spray enough waxoil in all the cracks and corners where water could build up, that includes also the underside of the door where the outher plate(skin) of is bend around the door frame = VERY IMPORTANT!!

Arie, they also powder coated the outside too. Did it before I could get to them to tell them not to!

DO you think I should look for a special primer to go over the powder coat? At the moment I've only got the U-POL primer.
Tarquin

No primer needed if you gonna use 2-pack paint.
Just degrease it and sand it up with P80(rough), then plaster/filler it and continue with the paint as normal.

Its a pitty they powdercoated the outside of the door too as filler bites better on bare metal.
Anyway, a good practice for the V8 midget: the do's and dont's.

Do test if everything still fits before finishing the paint: doorlocks/handles/windowrail and so on...
