MG Midget and Sprite General - 1500 Owners
Ignoring the manufacturers recommendations, what do you find is the practical interval between replacement of the timing chain?
R Locock
I think other parts of the engine will need rebuilt before the timing chain needs to be changed, so change it when getting other work done, whether it needs it or not(!).

Before you go to Africa and after you've been around the rest of the world!!!!! Get a duplex kit though as that should make Bridget more reliable and steady.

I normally recommend checking the bottom end at around 40,000 miles for Thrust Washer replacement. I'd do the simplex chain at the same time since they have a habit of stretching on the 1500s. As Rach said, for ease of mind get a Duplex kit. A vernier pulley is essential for utilising a different cam but if you are staying stock this isn't such a big deal. In this case use a TR5/6 pulley and duplex chain set up since it is 'plug and play' on the 1500.

I fitted the TR5/6 pulley and duples about 20 years ago, very worthwhile mod when doing work on the negine. Les

Thanks for the input everyone. Rach you read my mind, I haven't touched the bottom end for 40,000 miles and I was just wondering if I would get away with another 15,000. Now I need to go and look up what a thrust washer is!
