Austin-Healey 3000 - Replacing rocker bushes
| Has anyone replaced their own bushes in the rocker arms in a big Healey? If so, what did you use to press them out, and new ones in? I know a tool could be turned on a lathe, but don't have ready access to one.I realize that after new bushes are installed, they need to be honed to size for the new rocker shaft. Thanks for your thoughts. Pete Haburt |

| Pete, Just last week I had the rocker bushes replaced in my 1959 AH3000 MkI. Removing and reinserting the bushes were easy for my mechanic. He then reamed out the bushes but was unsuccessful on the first try (the loose bushes let too much oil through, which worsened the problem he was trying to repair). He then ordered a new set of bushes and had a local machine shop ream the bushes to fit the rocker shaft snugly. Now the whole assembly seems to work fine. The machine-shop bill was $156. Best wishes, Tom Harrison P.S.: Incidentally, upon firing up the car after replacing the bushes, a new, unrelated sound emerged. The nut holding the timing chain to the camshaft was loose, so my mechanic replaced the timing chain and the tensioner. Now the car runs like a new one. |
