Austin-Healey 3000 - MGA - A poor man's Healey
I posted the following on the MGA BBS site - a reader suggested we hear what you Healey guys have to say as we may be biased! "While I am happy with my 60 Roadster I have always lusted after a big Healey – is that the same for you guys? I could not afford one when I was a student and still cannot now without upsetting the boss and also I don’t want to get rid of the A! A good condition MGA roadster in Australia is $US19-23,000 whereas an excellent condition Healey 3000 Mk 3 is $US60,000 may explain it. The upside of the A is that they are not bad looking, are cheap and easy to fix, other owners are very friendly and helpful, Barney’s web site, this BBS and our local MG club." Mike

Mike Not much life in this BBS compared to the M.G. one. Perhaps we could stir them up a bit. I have a 3000 Austin Healey and an MGC, no MGA however. The MGC is a much better car, better design, better roadholding, not so hot, better gear ratios. But the low end torque is not the same. Ok you pay by 20% worse petrol figures.. I use them both and like them a lot. Sven

Thanks Sven, Not much life in this site! I agree with your comments but the 3000 is still a great looking car? Mike

Mike YES to you question. I have had mine since 1973, wouldn't dream of selling it. The growl when it takes off..eh yes great car. Where are all people ?? My wife prefers the MGC though, much more predictable handling. Remember the MGC is 60s design whereas the Healey is beginning of 50s design. Not much to go wrong on either low stress big engine easy to understand mechanics if a bit cramped at times. Go get yourself one. Life is too short not to. Sven

I sold my 57 MGA to a friend in 69, and he's still my best friend, and still has the A. I picked up a TD in 70, and while restoring that, bought a Healey Phase 1 3000 in 82 that I'm still driving. Also have a restored Bugeye. My biggest problem is deciding which one to take to the store, or a drive, or to a car show. They are all different rides and I can't say which one is my favorite, but if it's raining or some lad pushes me to race, its behind the big healey 2" HD8's that gets me going. Rarritt! Bob
